What is it like to live in Guangzhou? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I am from Guangzhou and I think Guangzhou is one of the best cities for a living and also the top three best cities in China mainland. it has the best location, less than 2 hours you will be in Hongkong, and the whole city is well connected by metro, bus. Guangzhou is a new modern international city with lots of high rise buildings. It also has lots of universities there, so you can also hang out with international students or local students.

What is the student lifestyle like in Guangzhou?

I didn't study in Guangzhou for my bachelor degree, but according to friends who studied there, campus life in Guangzhou is wonderful, cozy. Southern china has its unique cuisine, lifestyle. We like to go to have the morning tea break or afternoon tea break after classes or work with some friends in a small tea house or restaurant and during the night, you can simply take a walk in Zhujiang New City where stands the Guangzhou tower and other buildings or go to night bars, Guangzhou is a city you can have fun for 24 hours.

How much does it cost to live in Guangzhou?

As long as u are not going to buy a house in Guangzhou (which the average is 2500-4000 euros per square meter), I think the living cost is quite ok. 300 euros you can have a flat per month, 150 euros for the food if you cook by yourself. Transportation is quite cheap in the city around 20 euros a month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Guangzhou? Is there any advice you can give?

I think it is easy to find accommodation, there are lots of agencies there or international offices in each university (the uni also has dorms for international students as well). And we also have 58.COM and ganji.com where you can search for houses or flats. The best way is to make local friends. They can help you to find rooms or even provide you with a room with a very reasonable price.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

As I said before, Southern China has its own cuisine. We prefer healthy and delicious food, so we have our own way of cooking and special materials. That's why it is difficult to find overweight people in the south. But believe me, Yue Cai (the name of Cantonese food) is really delicious and worth of trying every day.

What places would you recommend visiting in Guangzhou?

You can enjoy city life in Tianhe and Haizhu and Yuexiu district and go out to the countryside for a change during the weekends.
