Why did you choose to go to Genoa, Italy?

I found an interesting project for my PhD and wanted to try it.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I have 3 years for my PhD project. The salary is relatively small if you want to live as an independent person in your own apartment, on my viewpoint. But if you are ready to share a flat salary is still okay. The prices for food are relatively high (comparing to Germany & Russia but in range with Dutch prices). Transport is 1. 50 per 120 min but the drivers have the strikes almost every month, which make using public transportation uncomfortable. Car is not the best option for Genova.

What is the student lifestyle like in Genova?

I don't have time to enjoy 'dolce vita', we work a lot. 30 days off per year (incl Xmas, NY, summer holidays). There are very few places for the night life in Genova comparing to other cities I lived in (Moscow, Berlin, Groningen). Lots of restaurants! Food is a lifestyle in Italy. Travelling options for a weekend: Milan, La Specia, Florence, Pisa, Nice.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Genoa to other students?

For a short period - definitely! I wouldn't stay here for 3 years if not my PhD. After Moscow and Berlin I feel a little bored here.

What is the food like?

Ligurian typical food. Thin pizza, lots of pasta, pesto, focaccia, cheap fish. Italian food is always good.

How much does it cost to live in Genova?

  • 570 euro: agency cost.
  • 480 euro per month.
  • 100 euro: administrative costs.
  • 46 euro per monthly bus ticket.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yeap! There are courses held by the university.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Genoa from your city?

Direct flights from Moscow during summer time and arrive in Milan airport.
