Experience in Gaziantep, Turkey by Ahmed
What is it like to live in Gaziantep? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Gaziantep is good and safe, I have lived there for 4 years and during my stay I have not witnessed a single criminal activity and locals are always welcoming with international students. It has a very good transportation, accommodation and all prices are reasonable.
What is the student lifestyle like in Gaziantep?
Lifestyle in Gaziantep is awesome, I would say it's a student city. There are a lot of international students from many different countries, everywhere you go you'll find foreign students. Sometimes, you can make parties or picnics with your friends. If you speak english you will be okay even if you don't understand Turkish because many locals understand english so it's easy to live here.
How much does it cost to live in Gaziantep?
It depends on which university you study and the area you live in. If you live in a studio or a hostel you can spend around 1, 000TL (500 USD) monthly with all expenses. Sometimes you can spend much less or much more than this.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Gaziantep? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not difficult at all to find accommodation, there are many studios and hostels you can get a flat to live alone at price of 450TL to 550TL (250 USD) monthly or a flat to live with friends at 550TL to 850TL (400 USD).
It is much better to live with your friends to share expenses.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Doner is the common food there and it's one of my favourites. Also Iskender is good and I am sure you will like it.
What places would you recommend visiting in Gaziantep?
Gaziantep University area is always the best place to live. There are many students around and it's easy to get to school from there.
Is it good to eat out in Gaziantep? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, it is good to eat at local restaurants which have traditional food. Some of my favourite places are Tatbak, Antochiya and Basak.
Is the nightlife good in Gaziantep? Where is good to go?
At night most of the students spend their time at bars or concerts and parties (if there is one).
What advice would you give future students heading to Gaziantep?
Make turkish friends. For international students it's always a good idea to have a friend that is turkish so that they can help you out sometimes.
