Erasmus Experience in Falun, Sweden by María del Mar
Why did you choose to go to Falun, Sweden?
I don't know exactly the reason. I wanted to go to a country with a different culture, different people and different weather.. and Falun was what I was looking for. It's a very beautiful city and now, I know that my choice was really good.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It's depend on your home university. I was in Falun ten months but I know other people who were there only five months. I recommend you to stay there as long as you can.
I have not received so much money but It changes every year. I think you must have some saved money when you decide to go to Falun.
What is the student lifestyle like in Falun?
Although Falun is a small town, you can do a lot of activities. On the one hand, you have to go to the University everyday. You have to study a lot and do many works. On the other hand, there are a lot of parties for erasmus students. But don't worry because you will have time to do many different things!
Would you recommend the city and the University of Falun to other students?
Of course. The city is really nice. There are a lot of places to visit like the museum, many lakes, the center, ect... Moreover, the University is small but It works very good. I totally recommend you to go to Falun.
What is the food like?
The food is similar to Spanish. The supermarkets are very big and there is a lot different food. It is not a problem at all.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Falun?
No, it was really easy. Other students informed me about that. You can live in a flat or in a residence. Personally, I lived in a residence and I was very comfortable. I recommend everybody to live there.
How much does it cost to live in Falun?
It depends on where you live. It costs to me 350 euros each month but it can change.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
The language is not a problem because everybody speaks English in Sweden. I didn't need swedish in order to comunicate. However, if you want to learn Swedish, there are a lot of courses avaible in the University.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Falun from your city?
The easiest and most economical way to travel from one city to another is by train. There are lots of trains in the central station of Falun and you can go to other cities easily. Moveover, it is not expensive.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Falun?
Well, you can go to many places. You can organize a party inside the residence or in your flat. However, you can go to the Student Union. it's a place for students where there are a lot parties. There is a party every friday. You also can go to Etage and other pubs.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Falun?
There are many restaurants in Falun, so you can go when you want. The only disadvantage is that they are a bit expensive.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Falun has lots of cultural sites to visit. As I have said before, you can go to the Museum, University, ect.. In addition, there are many beautiful lakes and forests. There is also a big library and many shops.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Falun?

I wounder if you could explain you experience about your living in this cold weather.
María del Mar Aguilar Segado 8 years ago
That wasn't a problem. It is true that it is very very cold there. In fact, there is a lot of snow in winter and we were 20 degrees below zero. However, it was part of the experience, it was also new to me and I was happy to have such a different weather. Don't worry, all buildings have a good heating.
