What is it like to live in Egilsstadir? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's a very small town of around 3000 people. There are no universities here, but there is a secondary school (high school). The surrounding nature is beautiful.

What is the student lifestyle like in Egilsstadir?

If you're in secondary school, it's quite nice. There is a student union which organizes events and there are quite a few competitions for students in different schools around the country, for example between debate teams, between teams competing in general knowledge and improvisational theater.

How much does it cost to live in Egilsstadir?

Iceland in general is very expensive, the price of accommodation, food ect. is quite high. The rental market is also very pricey. Alcohol is only sold in government run shops and in bars where the price is so high people generally try to drink before they go out rather than in the actual bars.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Egilsstadir? Is there any advice you can give?

Yes, but not impossible. The price is cheaper than for example in Reykjavík but still quite high. As a secondary school student you can find accommodation through the school.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Not a lot of restaurants but still a fair selection.

What places would you recommend visiting in Egilsstadir?

The swimming pool is quite nice, you can hike in Selskógur, Hallormsstaðaskógur (outside the town), Fardagafoss (outside the town), Hengifoss (outside the town) and a lot of other places.

Is it good to eat out in Egilsstadir? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Not particular but not impossible. I recommend Gistihúsið Egilsstöðum (Lake hotel) which has nice restaurant quality food.

Is the nightlife good in Egilsstadir? Where is good to go?

There are two bars, Askur and Feiti fíllinn.

What advice would you give future students heading to Egilsstadir?

Don't go here as a university student. As a high school student, you can get pretty much all your information from AFS.
