Erasmus Experience in Dijon, France by Christina
Why did you choose to go to Dijon, France?
Because it was the only French University my university has agreement with (is normal as I studied German Language and Philology).
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship was 6 months (August - February). I received 400 euros per month (from my University (in December all together) and I received also 150 euros per month from the French Government - is normal if you stay in dorms or if you rent an apartment in France.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Dijon to other students?
The city is beautiful and the university big - yes I would recommend it to those students that don't think that Erasmus is a big Party (cause in Dijon is not)!
What is the food like?
Like French food- mustard is typical to the local dishes (Dijon mustard)!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Dijon?
I applied in April for the student dorms - and then I received in June an email, if I want to have a dorm with a bathroom in the room (difference was about 80 euro per month - if I remember right I paid 230 euros and without a bathroom was 150).
I totally recommend the dorms with the bathroom I lived in: they were new, the kitchen was clean and was cleaned every day by the clean ladies - the rooms were small but you have a bathroom inside! The other dorms are bigger but older - is not so clean as you can imagine, and with no bathroom at the room.
And actually with the money from the French government is the same, as you will get more money if you have a more expensive room (I got the 80 euros back - per month / my friend, who lived in dorm without bathroom got 30 euros per month that means: 150 (with bath) versus 120 euros).
How much does it cost to live in Dijon?
A lot. Like everywhere in France. Maybe is not so expensive as in Paris but you have the option to buy from super market and cook at home!
Mac Donalds is one of the cheapest solutions but not the best.
I highly recommend you to eat at the university - and cooking at the evening.
What we did? Once a week - usually on weekends went to eat outside! Really delicious, but around 10-15 euros for a normal menu.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes, and yes.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Dijon from your city?
I was in Germany before, so I travelled in Dijon with train. There is a car 12-25 is the name, that gives you up to 75% discount. Costs 50 euros and lasts 1 year.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Dijon in the future?
To do the sports events that the university offers! Canoe kayak - sailing - dance - trampoline..., everything you can imagine!
