Experience in Deventer, Netherlands by Sandra Stefania

What is it like to live in Deventer? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Deventer is a small (student) town. I personally do like it, but is because I do like small towns. There is a lot to do if you know where to go. However, for city people it might be boring.

What is the student lifestyle like in Deventer?

The student life here is really calm. We have places where you can go out and have fun. However, most of the students after few months prefer to stay at home parties with their friends and have fun there. Nevertheless, on tuesdays, thursdays, fridays and saturdays the city is really crowded, many students go out these days. Also, some fitness studios as well as other establishments have special offers for students.

How much does it cost to live in Deventer?

It is expensive to live here, more since holland has this 21 % taxes nowadays. The menu on the restaurants are mostly over 10 euros and beer over 2 euros for 300 ml.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Deventer? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not difficult, but it is expensive. I would recommend to find the room by Deventer room market on facebook, and if you dont find anything there then try to get in contact with people living here, they might help. But don't use any type of agency. They are expensive and not efficient. The worst one are Eurowonen and another one that I don't remember. Just do not use them.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Mmm... food.. Here everything is fast food. I don't eat too much dutch food because I don't like it. The only thing I like here is the Bakkenen Vish, which is backed fish and fried cheese, this is really good.

What places would you recommend visiting in Deventer?

Deventer is really small and you can find out everything by yourself. However, I recommend to walk around the city and see the small and interesting shops hidden in the city. You might find really amazing and curious things here in Deventer. Look for a show with buddas and asian stuff... Try to see the museum, you will get amazed or really really scared.

Is it good to eat out in Deventer? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Like I said, it is really expensive, but good. Some restaurants are really nice.

Is the nightlife good in Deventer? Where is good to go?

Go to Boemel or De Tijd. Personally, I prefer De Tijd.

What advice would you give future students heading to Deventer?

If you need cheap furniture go to Het Goed. This is a shop with good second hand furniture. The doctors here won't look after you if you are not really really sick. That is awful. The cheapest supermarket is Aldi. Although Lidl and De Dirk are a little bit more expensive, they are much better. And if you need shampoo or gel go to Action, it is the cheapest place to find those things.
