Free things you can do in Copenhagen
The introduction
Hello readers, I hope, that you are all doing just fine. In this article I want to tell you about some things in Copenhagen (that is the capital of Denmark, if you don't know), that you can see without anything to pay, and, at the same time, enjoy being there in this lovely city, while it's really too expensive to be there or live there, so that it's really important for people to know some things and places to visit free of charge.
So that, let me tell you about some places of interest worth visiting while being in Copenhagen and, since they are all free, you should definitely visit them if you have time! It's not something, that is not worth doing or visiting, because there are not many things, which cost cheap or which are free of charge!
1. See the little marmaid
Well, to be honest, everyone just wants to go and see this little marmaid statue, which is like a symbol for Copenhagen and all the Denmark itself, and they walk all the way from the city center to this edge of the ground to see the statue and have a picture taken in front of it or with it and they just don't really know how disappointed they can be after seeing this famous statue. You may ask why and I will tell you, that it is not that big of a statue, you know, it is just a small statue just like the name says itself _ "the Little Mermaid" and it's just as small as it can be. So that when the tourists go there and want to see the statue, they expect it to be a large one and they all get very disappointed because of the size and the queue there always is for taking photos. There is usually a long line of people waiting their turn to take a picture with this famous little mearmaid statue, no matter how small it is as long as they have come all the way to that statue just to take a photo.
To be honest, the little marmaid statue is not that nearby to the city center and that's why I was a little lazy to go there, especially after getting to know, that it was not that large or anything, however, if you are somewhere nearby Nyhavn, you should walk to the little marmaid statue and have a picture taken with it. It's also very well seen from the water if you take a boat tour there in Copenhagen.
2. Go to the botanical garden
I think, most of the cities have these beautiful botanical gardens, which they are very proud of and they try to have as many different and unique flowers s they can get and they always try to make it possible for every kind of flower to be available in their botanical gardens, so that the tourists and the local residents and everyone in general would love to go there and see everything that is kept alive there.
Well, Copenhagen also has its great botanical garden, which is in the city center and is very beautiful, I must say. And it's totally free to enter the botanical garden and enjoy the things there. It's situated on a pretty large area, so that there are many different plants and flowers there and the area is very well liked by the citizens and they come there for reading or having a picnic or just hang outand stuff like that and it's really nice to have such things in the city like that to hang out, if you ask me.
The Botanical Garden of Copenhagen is owned by the University of Copenhagen and it’s a very good place for those, who just love plants and flowers and nature.
There’s this amazing building in the center of the Botanical garden, which is a place for tropical plants and things like that and there are those round stairs, where you can climb up and look down on the plants grown there. It’s an amazing view from up above there , if you want to know the truth.
There’s also this veranda or whatever it’s called, and there you can also find a small cabin, where you can order some snacks or coffee or tea and there are also some tables and chairs, where you can just sit comfortably and enjoy your lunch there in this amazing nature in the center of Copenhagen and you won’t even feel like you are in a capital of Denmark or any country, because there’s such silence and calmness and plants around, that you feel so relaxed and you don’t want to leave that place ever!
Although, I must tell you, that though the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen opens early in the morning at 8:30 a.m., it is open until 4 p.m., so that if you want to visit it, you should do that during that time, because otherwise if you get there after 4 p.m., you won’t get inside, because it will be closed, of course. That’s a pity, because some people can’t really be out of their works or studies until 4 p.m., but they may be free on weekends and they can visit the Botanical Garden in those times.
The Botanical garden of Copenhagen is a research-based place and it’s Botanisk Have in Danish. It covers about 10 hectares and it’s all in green colours and covered with lawns and plants and bushes and flowers, which is fascinating. You can just go there and sit there on the lawn and relax. And there’s that glasshouse in the middle of it is a historical building, which dates back to the 19-th century. And it’s a huge thing, I must say. When I first saw it, I was pretty much amazed by the strict look of that building and I couldn’t even imagine, that there would be such amazing plants there inside of it.
3. Glyptoteket
Glyptotek is a must see place in Copenhagen, because it has so many significant things in it from all over the places and it’s really important to visit it if you are interested in history and art, especially. I was not going to go there, because I thought, that it wouldn’t be that interesting and, since most of the museums were closed at 5 p.m. already, I couldn’t really get there on time, because I wanted to go to other places rather than Glyptotek. It was after some time, that I got to know about it and realized, that it was worth visiting and I will tell you why.
Well, this Glyptotek contains very important monuments and statues and historical things as well as paintings from famous artists from all over the world, but mostly there are European exhibits there. And the building itself is very nice and there is a beautiful fountain in the middle just like they had in ancient Rome and Greece and it’s very pleasant to just sit there and relax.
Usually it costs money to enter Glyptotek in other days, but if you go there on Tuesdays, you can enter there free of charge! That was when my friends went there and they told me, that it took them by surprise to enter the building and not pay anything for the visit.
Glyptoteket is located on Dantes Plads and it’s called the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, which was built around the personal collection of Carl Jacobsen, which was the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries. On Tuesdays it’s open from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. now and you can visit it whenever you want during these times. It’s somewhere nearby Tivoli gardens, nearby the H. C. Andersens Blvd, so that it’s not that difficult to get there, if you want to know the truth.
The Glyptoteket is a very great place to visit if you love history and art and museums, in general. People can just hang out there in the small garden with some benches and fountain and a pretty cozy atmosphere around.
4. Gartnerboligen flower garden
So, I was living in Gartnerboligen apartments in the Housing Foundation accommodations and that’s how I know about them, I guess, because otherwise I wouldn’t know about this beautiful garden of flowers located there, if you want to know the truth.
Well, I chose that place to live through the Housing Foundation web page, where they had sent me a link to their accommodations and then I could choose between them and, to be honest, there were not many pictures of those accommodations, however, I could see the buildings and some parts of the apartments and I chose that one, because it was just somewhere not very far from my university building and, besides, it looked pretty wonderful on the pictures, however, when I went there, it really exceeded my expectations, because everything was very beautiful there and those flowers in the garden in front of the building were amazing.
So, this Gartnerboligen shared apartments were located on Grønnegårdsvej 15 in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen and many people knew about the garden, I guess, because there were always many people walking around there looking at the flowers and, besides, there was also a pretty cozy café there and they could enjoy a cup of coffee or some other things there. There’s this Cafe Væksthuset just in the corner of the garden and it allows you to order some things and sit there and enjoy the flowers.
5. Kunsthal Charlottenborg
Well, this is a place, where I was not going to go, however, my friends from the Internal Medicine course told me , that they were going to go to the Kunsthal Charlottenborg and whether I would go with them or not. And there was this one day, when we could just go and visit the Kunsthal Charlottenborg free of charge. So that, it would be pretty fun going there with some other people and that was why I decided to go and, besides, there was a pretty good exhibition in that Kunsthal Charlottenborg except from the other exhibitions and it was a really interesting thing to go there.
When you go to the Nyhavn, which is a very famous place in Copenhagen, this Kunsthal Charlottenborg is seen from there, i mean, it's located just beside the Nyhavn canal and the design of this builing is pretty fascinating and I was wondering what it was, when i first saw it.
6. Visit Christiania
Visiting Christiania while being in Copenhagen is a must, too, if you ask me, because it’s a pretty amazing and interesting place. It’s not just drugs, that are there, but there are also great art pieces and places, where you can enjoy hanging out and the woods there around and it’s a very large place, which you can not really see in a couple of hours or even in a day, if you want to know the truth. Everyone knows, that the Christiania is a free place, where people live freely without any regulations and laws, though they have their own laws, which they obey pretty much. However, there are some times, when the police goes there and they arrest some people using drugs and things like that.
Christiania is a freetown, as they call it and it's an anarchist self-proclaimed district in the city of Copenhagen. It has about 1000 citizens and they don't really like cars in the Christiania, so that you will barely find a parking space for some cars there in Christiania. They move around by bicycles and they even have created a bicycle of their own and everyone knows, that there are these bicycles which is kind of a truck and you can put some things inside and carry them around.
Christiania is becoming more and more famous with its freedom and way of living. If you look at the map , you will see , that it's an island and there are these canals around it and when you go on a boat trip through the canals of Copenhagen, you will go somewhere nearby the shores of Christiania, too ,and you will see some buildings from the water.
Going there you should know, that it’s forbidden to take pictures and videos there and if they notice you that you are not obeying their rules in the places, where the recordings are forbidden, you will be in trouble, trust me. Well, that's because the people buying some weed there don't want to be noticed and, what's more, they don't want to be on some pictures or videos, of course. You know , there are many famous and high rank people, who buy weed there, I guess, so that it's really unnecessary for them to be published in some paces or whatever for the things, other people do, too. Of course, some people go to Christiania and take some pictures and some videos about things happening there and they do it without anyone noticing, because if someone notices, that they are taking pictures and videos, then they mightt be punished by the local citizens there and it will be pretty bad, if you want to know the truth.
Well, when I was there in Christiania, I saw many different things there, which were pretty amazing and it was really worth going there, because you should see the things, that people can do and create. The people living in Christiania are really creative and they are pretty hard working, if you ask me, because they do all that stuff and they live freely and they have pretty good environment around. It's not a chaos or something like that around there and they pretty much abide the laws, which they have created for themselves or for others visiting the place.
