Going to Studenterhuset

So, you know, we had those games at the park and it was kind of raining, too, there, however, we had some clothes on and it was not that much of rain, so that we could still hang out there.

Kathrine had then planned something for us if we wanted to. It was like a gathering for a dance stuff and it was a great place for students, as she said. She told us, that she was going to go there for 7 p.m. and we could join her if we wanted. Of course, it was like a dancing thing mostly, however, there we could just hang out and watch people dance and drink or eat or whatever, so that I really got interested in that thing and wanted to go there. And though it was raining a little bit, many of our students said, that they would come with us. Some of them just went home and said, that they would meet us at that place, and the remaining just waited for Kathrine to come back to that park and we would just follow her, because we didn’t really know the place and we could just get lost and not find it or something like that. I decided to wait for Kathrine, too, while she was taking the playing things to the office building with her bicycle.

She returned pretty soon and then we left for the Studenterhuset. I imagined the place to be just some usual place like a café or something like that, however, it exceeded my expectations, I must say. Though it was not very large place and it should have been, so that even more students would have a place there to sit and enjoy the environment.

To be honest, I didn’t think, that we would have to walk so much until the Studenterhuset and neither did other students. However, we just followed Kathrine and she just kept going and we would ask her “are we there yet?” and she would answer, that it was just a couple of minutes far away, but it seemed like we were walking there for an hour or so. And, besides, some of us had those cans of soda and beer in our backpacks and it made it even worse to follow her, not knowing when we would get to the Studenterhuset.

About the Studenterhuset

Well, this Studenterhuset is like a “Student’s house” in English and it’s really students’ house, if you ask me, because there are all the students of the university of Copenhagen and they just enjoy studying there while getting together in the Studenterhuset and drinking and hanging out and reading and doing some homework, maybe, or things like that while being in a comfortable environment in that cozy place. Well, to be honest, I would gladly go to such place after my lecturesand be there and do some stuff there. It’s a pretty nice place with all those chairs and tables and the signs on the walls and the music, which is really good.

The Studenterhuset is located on Købmagergade 52, 1150 København K, Denmark. Well, it’s in the city center, you must know, and it’s really closeby to the Stroget, which is the largest shopping street in the whole Copenhagen. And it’s also near the Round Tower, which is a great place to go to and get on its top and have a view from up above of the city of Copenhagen.

The working hours of the Studenterhuset is from 9 a.m. till 1 a.m., so that it’s a pretty good place to hang out from the very morning to the late night, because usually those kind of places are not open after midnight or even earlier and this is a great place to be there till late night.

The Studenterhuset also hosts some different events, and, for example, if you go there on December the 15-th, you will heat Klub Tesla feat. DJ Jim Atomic from 10 p.m., which is a great thing, because it’s a Friday night and people are free to hang out and relax in such places like this, and many people like live music, especially the club music, so that it’s a pretty good idea to go there.

There’s even this second floor, where you get upstairs with those spiral stairs, which are pretty cool and it’s like in the middle of the room. You can even play pool there in the Studenterhuset. Well, it’s like a student’s house run by students for the students. If you are studying at university of Copenhagen, then you are automatically a member of Studenterhuset and you can get the discounts on their snacks and entry fees and beverages. And if you are not a student at the university of Copenhagen, but you are studying at another institution of higher learning, you can just sign up at the Studenterhuset and you will get the discounts, too. You can even volunteer there as a staff member or something like that.

On the road to the Studenterhuset

We went through different places while going to the Studenterhuset and everything seemed so beautiful, that we wanted to have some pictures everywhere, however, there was not that much time for everyone to take pictures in all those places. One of those places was this “Den Kongelige Livgarde”, which was a large place, with some large gates and you couldn’t’ just walk in and look around like a tourist, because there were the royal army people inside there. It means Royal Life Guards, which is a part of the Danish Army and it was founded in 1658 by king Frederik the 3-rd.

We also walked through other places, one of them had this metal column and there were small houses for birds coloured in different colours, which were really cute and lovely.

The studenterhuset was just in the city center or something like that, nearby the Round Tower, which is a must-see building in Copenhagen and it’s a very tall building, where you can get upstairs and have a view of the city of Copenhagen from up above. And that place kind of became my orienting thing, because you could see the Round Tower from other nearby placesand when you saw it, you knew, that you were somewhere in the center and you could easily get there wherever you wanted. To be honest, I usually visited this place called Flying Tiger Copenhagen, which was a pretty large market, where you could buy many things in pretty cheap prices and they had so many things, that I wanted to buy, but it was not possible, because then I would not be able to carry all of them.

Anyways, we went near the Round Tower and Kathrine told us to visit it someday if we wanted to have a great view of Copenhagen from above, however, that day we had those plans of visiting the Studenterhuset and it was nearly 7 p.m. I guess, and the Round Tower only worked until 8 p.m. and we could still go up there if we wanted to, but then we would miss the fun in Studenterhuset,so that we decided to visit the Round Tower some other day.

So, the Studenterhuset was just near the Round Tower and we went inside. There were so many posters and pictures and signs there, that you would need some time to see all of them. The atmosphere was really cozyand everything there seemed to be for the students, if you ask me. There was not much space inside, however, it was kind of enough what there was.

Settling in the Studenterhuset

Well, as there was too many of us, we took some tables and got them together like a long table and had all those chairs gathered up and sat down around those tables. We weren’t really hungry at that moment, however, we were still waiting for the dancers to show up, so that until the dances started, some people decided to have some snacks bought and they had seen a take away thing just outside called “Sunny Boulevard” and they went to buy some hamburgers or things like that there. I think, that it was kind of rude not to order in the Studenterhuset and go outside and buy some things there and then come back and eat them in the Studenterhuset, however, people wanted those burgers and they just went for them, so that what could you do?!  And, besides, after some time I did the same thing as them…

getting-studenterhuset-6ad30fd63e25ff459

They had many delicious things in Sunny Boulevard and most of the students bought large hamburgers or French fries. They didn’t cost cheap, but the price was not very expensive, either. So, they had all those large burgers in front of them and then some of them ordered some beer. To be honest, I didn’t really like the way beer was served. I mean, beer was in those plastic large glasses that you can buy in supermarkets and then throw them out. I think, beer is better when it’s served in glass glassesand not in the plastic ones, however, I guess, they didn’t want to have some extra dishes and that’s why they served the beer with plastic glasses.  But the beer was delicious, I must say.

So, after some time, the dancers were not there yet, so that I decided to have something bought for me , too, and I had seen this Netto supermarket somewhere just nearby and I knew, that they had some prepared baked things there and they didn’t really cost much, so that I went to Netto supermarket. There were many things that you could choose from in their bakery, however, I wanted to have something sweet and I took this sponge cake with chocolate chips, which cost 5 DKKand I also took some chocolate, which was marzipan with chocolate glaze and it was kind of green. I must say,, that I love marzipan and though it’s pretty sweet, you can eat small pieces of it and be really satisfied. Anyways, I suggested them to other students, however, they didn’t really want to have something sweet then and they were drinking beer. I had already had some beer in the park, so that I didn’t really want to have another one there.

After some time, there was this music and we noticed, that the dancers had come and there was this one guy, who was going to teach people how to dance and there would be some different dances there. We were all welcome to join them, however, they would be dancing in couples, so that you needed to have a couple, but it was okay to dance with anyone there, because the amount of people was not that equal there. Some of us wanted to learn to dance, so that they joined the group, however, I was not that keen to dance and I preferred to watch the others dance, and it was pretty good, too.

getting-studenterhuset-d7b224304f937c298

To be honest, I was not very excited about the dances, however, it was a really good idea if you loved dances and if you wanted to learn something, because you could do it for free and with some passion and excitement there.  There was this whole area for the dancers especially and they had half of the room for themselves and that’s why we had to have our tables moved a little bit in the back, so that all the people, who liked to dance there would have some space.

After the dances, there was some good music on and we listened to it and we chatted and stuff like that. I was pretty amazed by the environment there and how everything was really homey and how everything looked really lovely and beautiful. Even the toilets were pretty beautiful and kind of weird, however, I guess, that’s what made it look like a pretty characteristic thing for this Studenterhuset.

In all, the evening was pretty good and we had a lot of fun. We watched the people dancing and some of us even learned some moves of those dances and some of us just watched them, however, everything was really good and it was worth going there with other people from our course. It was only the third day and we did need some socializing with each other, so that we could understand each other more and not to be strangers to each other. Well, you know, getting together and drinking makes people get together and get to know each other well and that’s what happened that day.
