Experience in Ceuta, Spain by Jose Manuel

How do you find living in Ceuta? Do you recommend it? How is it?

Ceuta is phenomenal to live in. I would recommend it to anyone because it's a small city, built between the two last mountains of the Atta mountain range, which face towards the East of the Mediterranean and to the West of the Atlantic. We have a beach 30 meters away from the mountain, with a hot climate, softened by the sea.

How is student life in Ceuta?

Good and it's going to get better because a new university is opening soon.

How much does it cost to live in Ceuta?

I believe the same as everywhere. On one hand, certain products are more expensive due to importation from the peninsula. However, on the other hand, we have a tax similar to VAT, which is called IPSI but with a much smaller tax rate.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Ceuta? Can you give any advice?

As a general rule, they rent out an illegal flat between several students. However if it isn't for a long say, when they come to examine them, they look for more affordable places, for example the hostel 'La Puntilla'; which for only €12, provides accommodation for travelers 24/7, 365 days a year. Situated in the same port, it's a quiet place surrounded by sea and greenery. It has quality and is almost brand new since 15/02/2013. It has discounts for groups and long stays.

How is the country's food? What are your favorite dishes?

Ceuta is a melting pot of cultures and therefore is also so, of food. The most important and in order are; European, Arabic and Asian; or in other words; Spanish, Moroccan, Hindi and Chinese. My favourite dishes are the Gazpacho, the paella, then the cous-cous and the lamb, the kubat and the spring roll and last of all, the Hindu sweets.
