Experience in Cartagena, Spain by Estefania
What is it like to live in Cartagena? Would you recommend it? What is it like?
It is a perfect place to live in. I am from Cartagena, I grew up there and now I am studying my degree in the university there, so I know a lot about the city. It is a perfect place to live if you don't like big crowds but if you get bored in small villages. It has a historic old town which is has been growing and changing every day for the last 5 years, the difference is amazing. New establishments are opening practically every month, and when there isn't a sports or cultural event going on, there are loads of outdoor activities to do.
What is the student life like there?
It is improving slowly, every day there are more things to do and more parties, but the fact that it is a small city, means you meet people more easily. Every week there are new parties and the Erasmus organises all-sorts of things, there is also another organisation that organises parties every week, for all people, not just students.
How much does it cost to live in Cartagena?
Not a lot... rent can be between 150€ and 250€, the average is usually 180€, 200€, 220€. Food is cheap here, both in the supermarkets and going out for tapas or to a restaurant.
Tapas: 1. 80€. Beer and tapas: 2€ at the most.
Baguettes at the university: 2. 30€ with a beer or with a soft-drink.
Did you struggle finding accommodation in Cartagena? Can you give us some advice?
There are lots of options, if you go to the University, there are loads of advertisements, and you can look in the youth centre, just opposite the Universidad del Paseo Alfonso XIII.
What is the food like in the country? What are your favourite meals?
The food is Spanish... so it is good-quality and Mediterranean.
Dishes you have to try...
- Omelette
- Paella
- Serrano ham
- Fried dumplings
And lots more!
What places would you recommend to visit in Cartagena?
Calblanque beach, you have to take a bus to get there but it is worth it.
In general, it is worth going to all the mountains in Cartagena, they are full of military camps and have amazing views.
And the Roman amphitheatre, which is the oldest in the world.
And eating in Cartagena? What are some of your favourite places?
As for places to eat, for students, Uva Jumillana, Dowers, Flexo are the best... I really love the tapas in Baresico. There is also the grocery store, and every day something new is opening.
What places would you recommend to go out in Cartagena?
There are two areas, Calle de lo Pijos is popular, where you can get a bottle of beer for €1. Or in the city centre, Calle del Aire or Calle Cuatro Santos are the best places. Roses, Aire 13, Rincón del Mico...
Any advice you can give to future students studying in Cartagena?
My advice would be to try and meet local people from the city, there is no better way of getting to know a place. If you meet a 'Cartagenero', you will discover places that you won't have ever discovered otherwise.
Everyone is welcome!
