Experience in Cartagena, Spain by David

What's it like to live in Cartagena? How is it?

To me, Cartagena is a good city to live in, as it's quite a well-balanced city. It's a city full of history and industry, there's little traffic so you can use a car, you've got various hospitals and shopping centres, good links to the region's capital, Murcia, by train and bus, there's an airport approximately 20km away (San Javier airport), and it's got both mountains and beach in the same city. I like to call it the 'Barcelona' of the Murcia region.

How's student life in Cartagena?

Student life is good in Cartagena on Thursdays and Fridays, but people in the school of engineering rarely go out, whereas Murcia has better nightlife, but wherever you are you can find people who always want to go out.

What's the cost of living like in Cartagena?

I didn't live in Cartagena, I went by car as I live 26km away but I believe it costs between 200-150 euros a month to live in Cartagena, although of course if you have more money you'll live an easier life.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Cartagena? Do you have any advice?

There are two university residences; Alberto Colao residence and the one on Caballero street. These are always more pricey than living in a flat. You can get a room for 150-180 euros a month.

I love Spanish food, I'm a huge fan of our style of eating out.

You can get a small beer and tapa in loads of places for less than 2 euros, and whatever your favourite dishes are.

I recommend visiting Calle Mayor (Mayor street), the port (nightlife area, with pubs and clubs) there are Roman museums and lots of other things to see.
