When we talk about Egypt, the first place to come to mind are the great pyramids of Ancient Egypt. We picture these enormous pyramids in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by sand and desert... all that is just a myth. The pyramids of Giza are found in one of the districts in the suburbs of Cairo, called Giza, which is where the name comes from. Despite popular belief, the pyramids are found in the vicinity of this district; you can get to them easily by car and the traffic in this area (actually, in the whole of Cairo) is horrible. The area full of the tourist hotels is located in this district, with views that are normally of the pyramids which are the biggest tourist attraction.

The entrance fee doesn't cost too much, but it only includes a tour of the outside of the pyramids. If you want to go inside (not advisable if you're claustrophobic) you have to pay between 24€ (if you want to go into the biggest one) and 10€.

The three pyramids have different names, they are called the pyramids of Keops, Kefren and Micerinos. They were built to show the grandeur of the Pharaoh who was buried together with his belongings. A couple of years ago, the belongings were found around the pyramids; some buried boats were also found which were used for the journey to the afterlife. They would also be used in the afterlife.

All the pyramids were ransacked except for one of them, where the main chamber still hasn't been found. Despite popular belief, there are no traps or curses surrounding the pyramids, only ramps which gradually incline, leaving behind chamber after chamber which are difficult to access. These pyramids are the results of years of perfection, which you can see from the incomplete pyramids or the "practice pyramids". From the panoramic view, we can see a third pyramid which is separate from the others; it's suspected to be one of the "practice pyramids".

The pyramids used to be smooth, and despite now being able to see the limestone, they used to be covered in pink granite brought in from Aswan. The tip is the only part which is still covered and it's still not completely covered, since the peak was left to start another monument.
