Budapest, the best city for going out!
My name is Edmundo Luis and I spent two amazing semesters studying at Corvinus University in Budapest as part of the Erasmus scheme. During my time in this big and vibrant city I had many great experiences and want to share some of these stories with those who have just started their time there, mainly giving you some info about the best bars and clubs in Budapest, that helped make my time there so unforgettable.
Student Nights
Firstly, if you live or are studying in Budapest, don't miss out on the amazing international student nights! The biggest universities: Corvinus, Semmelweis, Eötvös Loránd (ELTE), BME, CEU and McDaniel Collage, all usually organise loads of huge parties and social events for their international students, bringing together all those part of the ESN. They are also a great way to meet more people, whether from your home country or from abroad, even your course.
The best bars and clubs
From Szimpla Kert, with it's unique vibe, to the welcoming Morrison's Music Pub and the more luxury clubs like White Angel and Club Studio, Budapest's nightlife, for students especially, is amazing. For pre-drinks, my flatmates (who are also Erasmus students, Spanish and Italian) and I usually meet in Szimpla Kert, one of the most famous 'ruin bars' in Budapest. You might find it a bit much at first, as it can seem quite chaotic, but as for me, any table made from an old car is a good table in my books.
Akvárium Klub is another good place to meet before going out, and you can find it in Deák square where the metro lines cross. My Italian flatmate and I really like it as we rent an apartment fairly close to Deák so it's easy to get to. There are loads of different clubs to go to on a night out. My favourites are Morrison's pub, close to the Opera, with cheap beer and always packed with students from all over the place; Holdudvar on Margarita Island, and Doboz. In all these places you'll always find yourself with beautiful girls to talk to, or a group of international students to have a chat with.
Art Cafes
If you you enjoy art cafes and shops, then Budapest is a great place for you to go. Visit the small modern exhibits in the Printa Cafe in Pest, or Szatyor Bar in Buda. It's also a great place to go and meet international students who specialise in art and design.
Festivals in Budapest
Budapest has a lot of festivals and cultural events that are definitely worth having a look at. Obviously, the most famous is Sziget. If you start studying in Autumn, it's worth getting there a couple of weeks before so that you can experience this international music festival. A lot of people tour in the city and there are other festivals throughout the year, just check any calendar and then take your pick. As for me, I loved the Pálinka festival (pálinka is a Hungarian brandy).
Accommodation
It may not be easy to find somewhere cheap and central to live due to the fact that so many international students come to Budapest. However, a good way to save money is to make some friends then share an apartment together. I found my accommodation, which is in District VII, and my flatmates on here. On this site you can find rooms, share your information and look for roommates, even chat with other students. On the portal too you can look for second-hand furniture and there are also tons of great offers for international students.
I hope this short guide will help you in some way or another in the future.
But in any case, I'm sure that you're going to have an amazing time in Budapest as I already miss it myself.
