WHAT IS A MYSTERY DINER?

Mystery Diners are volunteers who offer their time to visit a range of restaurants, hotels, pubs and contract catering outlets in return for the cost of the experience (excluding travel). You get to eat for free, the client gets invaluable feedback.

The reports are paid for by the hospitality operators who find them invaluable in understanding the experience, in detail, from a customer's perspective. They are used to improve standards and reward well-performing staff.

Before you apply to become a mystery guest, please check that are unable to meet the requirements below:

BOOKING A VISIT:

You will be able to browse for available visits and manage your reports in your diner profile. You will need a device, such as a mobile phone or scanner, to capture an image of a receipt. We will keep you up-to-date with relevant assignments in your area by email. You will be able to view what visits are available to you at any time and book online or over the telephone. You will be briefed on what to expect, how to prepare, and what to look out for ahead of each visit.

COMPLETING THE VISIT:

The visit itself then takes place as an ordinary customer experience (taking the brief into consideration), which we hope you will enjoy! You will need to prepare for a visit and to make detailed observations during its course.

COMPLETING THE REPORT:

Following your visit, you are expected to fill out the report relating to your visit by 12pm (GMT) the next working day following your visit (Mon-Fri), and submit it online. All reports should be an accurate and detailed, yet concise, account of your experience. Our reports need to be clear and meaningful for our clients and we would prefer to focus on the content rather than correcting your grammar. Amateur critics are not required: just people who can reflect the facts in clear English. We will support you with the necessary briefings, guidance and question prompts. Completing the report itself typically takes an hour.

CLARIFYING DETAILS:

You must be available to be contacted by telephone, the working day following each visit after you have submitted your report as The Mystery Dining Company may need to speak to you if there are any queries. Each report is sent through to our clients the day after the visit has been completed and we need to be confident that we understand every detail before it is sent.

REIMBURSEMENT:

You need an account that we can use to reimburse expenses related to your visit - in nearly all cases, you will need to upload a copy of the receipt as evidence. During the application process, you will be asked to supply account details. Our preferred method is to pay into a bank account in GBP - for other currencies, please see the international section on our website. The agreed reimbursement will be paid into your bank account approximately 4-5 weeks after your visit.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A good command of English.

  • Reliability.

  • Good observation skills.

  • The ability to write accurate, detailed reports.

  • A genuine passion for eating out.

  • A background in the hospitality sector (desirable, but not essential).

For the right person, being a mystery guest can be an enjoyable and rewarding role. Here is a summary of the main benefits:

  1. BE HEARD. Sometimes you want to tell staff what you think about the service you received in a restaurant, pub or hotel but it is not always easy to find an appropriate channel. You have the opportunity to make your voice heard above the crowd when service, product or food preparation is below standard or when a venue is excelling in a particular area. You can be sure that your reports will be read by the people who own and manage the businesses.

  2. RAISE STANDARDS. One of the most rewarding aspects of performing mystery visits is to realise the vital role that you play in raising standards throughout the hospitality industry. The feedback provided in our reports may be used to help to train staff members and to identify where processes need to be reviewed. This is something that we all benefit from when we go out!

  3. SAVE MONEY. Build money saving opportunities into your lifestyle and perhaps go out more often than you could afford to do otherwise.

  4. BE REWARDED. When you become a mystery guest, we want you to feel valued and rewarded for providing high quality reports on a consistent basis. Our promotion structure means that detailed, accurate and balanced reports will provide you with the opportunity to select a greater range of assignments, including top hotels, fine dining restaurants and high-end exclusive bars.
