What is it like to live in Braunschweig? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Braunschweig is a mid sized city, but it is very compact. You can reach almost everything by bike in under 10 minutes. When you take the bus or the tram, you can go by foot as well. It is a perfect city for lazy students, because you can hang out in parks, bars or whatever and everything is so close to your apartment. (Expect you live in westliches Ringgebiet)

So try to get an apartment near the university or city centre. (östliches Ringgebiet or Siegfriedviertel for example)

What is the student lifestyle like in Braunschweig?

It is ok. The exams are not very difficult, but when you are at the campus, go to the Mensa for lunch. We have lots of different meals. Some of them are even vegetarian or vegan.

How much does it cost to live in Braunschweig?

The room will cost between 300 € and 350 €. Then you need some money for food and leisure. I need 300 € for this too. But then you have a very easy life. So maybe you don't need so much money.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Braunschweig? Is there any advice you can give?

Unfortunately yes. Braunschweig is quite small and there are not many free rooms. So be fast and don't give up. It is hard. For everyone.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

I like to eat Asian (Chinese or japanish) food or Italian we have several restaurants which offer burgers or typical German food. Even falafel or döner is possible. Just try.

What places would you recommend visiting in Braunschweig?

The centrum of Braunschweig and some parks. Besides you should visit Wolfsburg, when you are interested in cars and the Harz (mountain). When you are at the university, you should get a ticket for bus, tram and train for Lower Saxony. You can even go to Hamburg without paying for an extra ticket.

For partying you should go to the "Meile" and for swimming we have several swimming centres/ open swimming pools.

Is it good to eat out in Braunschweig? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is good, but expensive. A meal with a drink will cost around 5 to 10€. You can go eating everyday, but then you may run out of money.

The Edeka near the train station is a really big grocery store and you will find everything there. The other grocerie stores in the city centrum are good too.

Is the nightlife good in Braunschweig? Where is good to go?

For partying you should go to the "Meile". There you will find some clubs. They are not really big, but it is ok. If you don't want to party, you can go to pubs and bars. We have lots of different types of beer. For example you should taste the beer from "Schadt's Brauerei" near the Welfenhof. They craft their beer on their own.

What advice would you give future students heading to Braunschweig?

Use the ticket for tram, train and bus from the university and watch everything you can. Braunschweig is great, but here are some amazing cities nearby. Spend your free time outside and meet people.
