Experience in Bournemouth, United Kingdom by Kathryn
What is it like to live in Bournemouth? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's nice and peaceful to live in bournemouth. The beach and the gardens in the city centre are a nice place to relax on a sunny day. I would recommend it if you are looking for somewhere small and quiet.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bournemouth?
There are lots of different societies for BU students, sports, arts and media, etc. Most students either live in halls or Winton/Charminster as accommodation is cheap in this area and it is very easy to find.
How much does it cost to live in Bournemouth?
In halls I paid about £120 per week with everything included, currently I am in a house share which is £325 a month without bills. On average I would say it costs between £350-£450 with bills per month.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bournemouth? Is there any advice you can give?
No, you can find rooms available on halls by joining the Freshers page, or Purbeck/Cranborne/Lyme Regis/Chesil halls pages. Or you can find people posting asking for a roommate on the university page.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Theres a variety of different foods, seafood is most common as it is near the pier but you can pretty much find anything.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bournemouth?
The beach, it is very clean and relaxing. I would also recommend visiting the gardens near the pier as they have an aviary.
Is it good to eat out in Bournemouth? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There is a lot of seafood places the closer you get to the pier but there is a range of different restaurants, I personally prefer italian places and there are some nice italian cafes/restaurants in Bournemouth Sq or Winton high street. I also really like to eat at the Mary Shelley Wetherspoons, it is really cheap!
Is the nightlife good in Bournemouth? Where is good to go?
There are lots of different clubs to visit but the main one is is Toast on Tuesdays (Walkabout, Yates and Bar me) this is popular with students as it is £1. 50 drinks. Cameo is also a popular club on Wednesdays playing charts, and Vinyl is a new club that plays alt music. Lollipop on Fridays at the Old Fire station is the SUBU event night that is really popular.
What advice would you give future students headed to Bournemouth?
Whilst halls is fun and you get an opportunity to meet new people it can be expensive so maybe look into getting a shared room. The transport is not the best so make sure your house is walkable/cyclable distance from the uni as sometimes the buses only come every hour. Whilst the library is good, often there will only be a few copies of one book, so I would advise to buy just the core texts you need for your course.
