My Erasmus Experience in Bologna, Italy - by Rocio
Why did you choose to go to Bologna, Italy?
I was allocated this city and the truth is, it really intrigued me. Although it's not as beautiful as Florence or Venice, it's still Italian and has beautiful architecture. It has its own magic which the other cities lack. Bologna is unique.
How long did your scholarship last? How much were you paid?
Ten months, and over that time I received 5, 000 euros divided into three installments.
What's the student life like in Bologna?
It's incredible, it really is the best Erasmus city like they say it is. There's a strong student atmosphere everywhere, which makes the city a really vibrant place to live.
Would you recommend the city and University of Bologna to other students?
Definitely. Its universities are well-known in Europe, the food is great, and Bologna is very well-located for travelling since it's very central. It has good train and flight connections.
What's the food like in Bologna?
The food's great. There's not that much variety, but you can get slices of pizza for just 1. 60 euros. If you're sensible, you can eat well at affordable prices here.
Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Bologna?
No, because I found somewhere before I arrived. I recommend you go to Bologna sometime during July or August, which is the time when people tend to move out of their flats. In September, it's almost impossible to find anywhere since everyone is in the same position.
How expensive is everyday life in Bologna?
Pretty expensive, but it does depend on what kind of lifestyle you lead. You can usually live on 550 euros a month, and have enough money for rent, food, bills and everything else.
How are you finding the language? Have you signed up a language class at the university?
I learned the language at the university, but what I think really helps you learn is living your life there like the locals do and being in contact with them. I didn't go to any specific Italian language classes.
What's the cheapest way of getting to Bologna from your home city?
I live in Cádiz, but I always flew directly from Seville to Bologna.
What are the best places for partying in Bologna?
Qubo, Lab16 and Giardini Margherita. I'd also recommend going to the Piazza Verdi for the night, there's a really good atmosphere there. La Chiesa di San Francesco and il Pratello are also good places.
What about eating out in Bologna? What are your favourite places?
Spaca Napoli (on Via San Vitale), Osteria dell'Orsa, Tratorria Belle Arti (on Via Belle Arti), and Trattoria Gino (on Via Massarenti).
What does Bologna have to offer in terms of culture?
Saint Stephen's Church, Due Torri, all the city's parks, San Lucca, and the secrets of Bologna.
Do you have any advice for future students coming to Bologna?
I don't believe it when people say that your Erasmus exchange is just partying all the time, because I had to study a fair bit too. Above all, for those of you who study Law, be advised that the Law Faculty is quite a strict one. You can manage everything though: Partying, studying, travelling... you just have to do a little bit of everything, and enjoy it! :)
