Experience in Bologna, Italy, by Lisa

What do you think of Bologna as a place to live? Would you recommend it?

As a city, it is quite difficult because it is very big. However, it is the oldest university in Europe and you can see this through its incredible architecture. It also has a very good reputation so it is a great experience academically.

What is the student environment like in Bologna?

It's good, but there were some strikes in the streets and squares whilst I was there. But the university is good and there are lots of different courses on offer.

How much does it cost to live in Bologna?

Life here is quite expensive and you must be careful with your spends. But if you are an Erasmus student, the grant helps a lot with things such as accommodation and groceries.

Have you struggled to find accommodation in Bologna? What advice can you give?

I do not live in Bologna and going to and returning from university every day costs a lot and is a big effort. Generally, being an international student, you would be given a room on campus (halls). Another option is that you could stay with a family in the city which will really improve your language. There are websites like homestay.com/italy.

What is the food like in Italy? What are your favorite dishes?

I eat tortellini alla bolognese, I like pizza, piadina (most typical romagna area) and "fritto gnocco"... and many other things. Here is a link to an article that explains all the best places to eat in Bologna, and for a cheaper price which is ideal for students: Guide to eat well (and cheaply) in Bologna .

What places do you recommend to visit in Bologna?

There are places to visit and all historical sites all over the city centre. These are some of the most popular things to do in the city.

  • Piazza Maggiore
  • Torri degli Asinelli e Garisenda
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vita
  • Teatro Anatomico
  • Fontana del Nettuno

Any advice you want to give to prospective students in Bologna?

It is best to find an apartment in the city because if not, you will become crazy like me!

Because there is so much to see in Italy, make the most of your time and travel to other cities, as there are lots of accessible places near Bologna.
