Experience in Bologna, Italy by Faruh
What is it like to live in Bologna? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Bologna for me is like being a part of the culture, which you never experienced. Normally in different cultures you are the guest (observer), in Bologna you are the part of the culture, because you can't resist from the atmosphere. I totally recommend it. Every day people are outside, having fun together, talking or sitting in "Trattorias" (family restaurants, the city is full of those). City is built for people, who feel lonely and sad, because the atmosphere here will not let you stay sad. The centre of the city is surrounded by Medieval structures, which are amazing.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bologna?
Studying in Bologna is pretty hard, you don't come here to party or have fun all the time. Normally you do not have much time for partying, but still, on weekends you can totally hang out with other students. There is a student square in the centre of the city, where all students are.
How much does it cost to live in Bologna?
Bologna is not very expensive if you have an accommodation, which we will discuss in the accommodation section. Normally, you spend 15-20 euros per week for groceries, 27 euros for transport (per month. unlimited amount of bus ridings), 3 euros for a nice pinta of Guinness Stout, or better 5 euros for 500 ml cup.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bologna? Is there any advice you can give?
Finding accommodation in Bologna is very difficult, I suggest to look for the apartments before you arrive. First, find people who you would like to live with, then find an apartment in centre (average single room price is 350 euros per month, double room 250-300 euros)
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food in Bologna is very good, it is also divers if you forget about infinite amounts of pizza places. I like meat, so my favourite place is a Greek restaurant near the Statistics department. I like eating pizza a lot and my favourite is grilled meat.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bologna?
Visit the main square and two towers, which are the most popular places. Try the Greek restaurant To Steki and a bar, called "Empire", which is great for watching football and rugby. Visit all the Medieval gates and take pictures of them.
Is it good to eat out in Bologna? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is really nice to eat in Bologna. My favourite place is To Steki, which is a Greek Restaurant. Also, for students there is a great and cheap pizza in a place, called "Pizza Casa". "Empire" bar is good for watching sports and having a precious cup of Guinness Stout
Is the nightlife good in Bologna? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is pretty good, you can go to the night clubs, my favourite is "Ganesh night club", because they have hookah (narghile) called here. You can attend different parties in disco clubs, the events are normally posted on the walls of the streets.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bologna?
Watch your belongings at night and in the buses. Try not to spend too much time outside at night. People think you are suspicious if you stare at them or stand outside doing nothing. Stay focused and have a wonderful cup of Guinness. Good luck.
