What is it like to live in Bologna? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Bologna is a wonderful student city. It has the largest community of international students in Europe and the University of Bologna is the most ancient of the western world. Studying in Bologna is absolutely worth it!

What is the student lifestyle like in Bologna?

As I said before, there are many international students. Also, the University is located right in the heart of the historical centre which means that being a student in Bologna forces you to discover and explore the city.

How much does it cost to live in Bologna?

It depends on where you live. A single room within the walls will probably cost around 400 euros per month, while a double room around 300 euros.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bologna? Is there any advice you can give?

Yes, it is extremely difficult. Many apartments have been transformed into Airbnb accommodations to host tourists which means that it has become even harder for students to find a decent place to stay. Nevertheless, if you are lucky enough and if you do not stop posting ads on Facebook, you'll certainly find something.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food in Bologna is great. I think that the Italian cuisine, in general, is amazing. Food here in Bologna is mainly about pork meat, pasta (tagliatelle al ragù) pizza and a good glass of red wine (Sangiovese).

What places would you recommend visiting in Bologna?

Its Two Towers, Piazza Maggiore, Piazza Santo Stefano and its Seven Churches, Via Zamboni (in the student quartier), Via del Pratello for a good aperitivo and the beautiful Giardini Margherita especially in spring and summer when it gets warmer.

Is it good to eat out in Bologna? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is absolutely great. I'd recommend you:

  • Marsalino, in Via Marsala to get a good aperitivo at a cheap price;
  • Osteria dell'Orsa to have some tagliatelle with ragù at a good price;
  • Mercato delle Erbe to try the Bolognese cuisine.

Is the nightlife good in Bologna? Where is good to go?

There are many different places where you can experience Bologna nightlife, especially when you are an Erasmus/international student:

  • Empire and Irish Pub in Via Zamboni, where they organise many events and activities for Erasmus students (Tandem night, ESN activities etc. );
  • Millennium; Qubò; Soda Pops = these are clubs where you can spend the night with your Erasmus friends for free.

What advice would you give future students heading to Bologna?

To enjoy the city and what it has to offer. Bologna is a special place, its arcades will protect you and guide you throughout your whole Erasmus experience.
