Erasmus Experience in Bologna, Italy by Michelle
Why did you choose to go to Bologna, Italy?
It was the only immersion program available at my university.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My university payed for everything, but each school has a different program.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bologna?
The student life here is very lively! This is to be expected since it is a college town.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bologna to other students?
I would 100% recommend the city and Unibo to other students because it's not very touristy, small enough that walking everywhere is not a problem, and the people are some of the friendliest I have ever met!
What is the food like?
The food here is amazing! Famous for mortadella and ragu, Bologna's rich culinary culture will have you gaining weight in no time! Although the local cuisine is very meat-heavy, it is not a problem to find vegetarian options in most, if not all restaurants, trattorias, and take-out joints.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bologna?
It didn't cost me to find my accommodation, but it did cost me once I found it!
How much does it cost to live in Bologna?
Expect to pay around 500 euros a month (or more depending on where you decide to live) for rent, food, and other expenses.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I am not sure if there are language courses at the University, but I studied Italian for 3 years before coming here to study so the language was not a problem for me.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bologna from your city?
Plane because it is the only option from LA.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bologna?
Cassero!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bologna?
Rosso San Martino, La Tua Piadineria, Panini Farciti, Pizza Casa, Pizza Irnerio, Bombocrep...and more!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Il Palazzo d'Accursio, all of the museums, La Basilica di Santo Stefano, L'Archiginnasio, and much more!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Bologna in the future?
If learning the language is important to you, DO NOT LIVE WITH ERASMUS STUDENTS. Find Italian roommates and speak speak speak! Don't be afraid to make mistakes because it's a natural part of learning.
The erasmus groups in Bologna also have excellent trips at really affordable prices so take advantage of that!
Open your mind and heart and you will fall in love with Bologna!
