Erasmus Experience in Bologna, Italy by Diana
Why did you choose to go to Bologna, Italy?
High research experience and academic knowledge in my field of study.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bologna?
Friendly people among students and teachers. Avoid if possible the periphery at night. Did not encounter any problems though..
Would you recommend the city and the University of Bologna to other students?
The city is nice, it is not the best city I have lived in, but the University of Bologna is outstanding.
What is the food like?
Best pizza and tortellini ever. Italians are very meticulous about their food, but not pretentious. Do not mention "spaghetti bolognese" to an italian, there is no such thing. It you want to impress them, the right dish is actually "tagliatelle al ragu' ". ;)
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Bologna?
High prices for private accommodation, student houses even more expensive.
How much does it cost to live in Bologna?
I think you can do OK with 400-500 euro/month, excluding accommodation and transport, depending on your lifestyle.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I learned to get by in italian fairly easy, used mostly english in the university.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Bologna from your city?
Plane - low cost company Wizzair.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Bologna?
Piazza Maggiore
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Bologna?
051 - near St. Petronio church
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Occasional fairs in the Piazza Maggiore, visit old city gates and admire architecture. I didn't get the chance to visit museums while in Bologna.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Bologna in the future?
Rent a car if possible (I recommend Dollar company from the Airport - I loved their Smart car) and visit Ferrari Museum in Maranello, and Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese, if you fancy cars. Even if you don't it is still spectacular.
