Summer day at Birštonas
Check ERASMUS+ projects and apply right now!
People say that you are the reflection of the 5 people, who are closest to you. Before going on the Erasmus project, I was studying every day and night, my friends were from the same city, usually those who I had known for 10 years or even more. One day my life vision changed - the biggest goals to pass the exams and learn all the names of the muscles were transformed. One spontaneous application for a business project on the ERASMUS+ page and here we go! I spent all week in Toulouse, France, but this article will be about the hidden place in Lithuania, where I went with the new friend I met in France. ‘’You haven’t been to Birštonas? Never? How is that possible? ‘’ – she was asking me with a big surprise. Usually, we tend to travel to places, that are far away on the map, as it gives us a sense of making impossible possible. In this way, we forget that there are many fascinating places so close to your home. And you don’t need a flight or a hotel. All you need is a friend, who is a passionate traveller, an amazing guide and has similar interests and values as you do.
Birštonas - mineral water, mindfulness, and relaxation oasis
During geography and history lessons I had learned the history of Lithuania in great detail. Thus, I knew that Birstonas is famous for its mineral water and spa resort. People from different countries come to Birštonas and stay in Egle sanatorium, where they relax, receive massage and drink salty water. Yes, the one I don’t like, as it is too salty…but healthy.
In Birštonas you will find 3 sanatoriums: Tulpe, Versme and Egle. My favourite and the only one I’ve been to is Egle. It is a modern recreational centre, opened in 2013. Today you can get there halotherapy, water pools, baths, massages or just spend your holidays in a calm environment surrounded by beautiful Lithuanian nature and rivers.
If you feel stressed or running all the time, take your travel bag and go to Birštonas. First, climb the Vytautas Hill, a 40 m slope where you will be standing in awe after you reach the peak. River Nemunas, forests and the stunning view will relieve all your soul set and heart set. Today, every tourist or a person who is in Birstonas has to climb the Vytautas Hill. Moreover, it is a perfect spot for meditation, selfie or a romantic date.
Balys Sruoga and the ‘’Forest of Gods’’
This resort was visited by a famous Lithuanian writer, who spent many years of his life at Stutthof concentration camp. Every person in Lithuania knows his name and will never forget such a tragic, dark and sarcastic book he/she had to read at the school. Balys Sruoga, the author of ‘’Forest of the Gods’’ shared his real-life story about those days, when the faith and irony were the only tools to survive. For those who are interested in history and enjoy reading, I would highly recommend reading ‘’Forest of the Gods’’ (or watch a movie).
Other places I would recommend:
-
Birštonas Museum
-
Sacral Art Museum
-
Observation Tower
After our intense climbing, we decided to go for a wonderful treat at the ‘’Saules terasa’’ cafe, which is must visit. As it is located on the 7th floor of Block B of ‘’Egle’’ sanatorium, you will have a perfect view, like the one you may find on the internet if you google Lithuania. It is a great place if you are looking for peace, silence and want to stay away from the people.
We ordered delicious dessert and let the time stop for a while. One day spent in such place reminded me, how important is to create valuable memories, be conscious of what you are doing and explore Lithuania even more!
