Experience in Bilkent University, Turkey by Meric

Generally, what is Bilkent University like?

It's a combination of good quality education and really cool people.

What are the facilities like?

Sports is in the center of everything. Bilkent has adopted the slogan "sports as a way of life" and it adapts it to the campus life. There are 3 different gyms with instructors and equipment, computer lab is really big and the library is the biggest and the most enriched library in Turkey. There are all sorts of food in the campus. Dorms are cool as well. Unfortunately there are strict dorm rules so you can't host anybody in your room (unless you secretly sneak them in) and there are no bars/pubs in the campus to hang out at cold nights, but there are several places to go right outside the main campus entrance.

What are the tutors like?

Most of the tutors are well known academicians who publish articles and stuff, so they might be a little aloof. They are ambitious so they expect hard working students. But they are more tolerant towards exchange students in arranging midterms and stuff.

Are the lessons easy in Bilkent University?

In Turkish standards definately no. But if you're coming from Netherlands, UK or somewhere else that is strict education, Bilkent will be a piece of cake for you.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

For Exhange and Erasmus students, there's a group that organizes trips and parties. They get together everyweek to organize stuff. Bilkent itself organizes Mayfest in May (a music festival), and each week the Orchestra gives a classic music concert in the music hall. Bilkent doesn't really organize a lot of activities but the student clubs do. You can track them through billboards they hang in the school.

Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?

It has one of the best in quality in Turkey. But I doubt if it's the best in Europe.

Are there any stories you can share?

Enjoy the green grass area while it's warm and sunny because in winter you won't even be able to walk 50 meters without shivering.
