What is it like to live in Bangalore? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Bangalore is one of the better cities to live in India. The crowd is more cosmopolitan and friendly and is not new to expat communities. Due to the ever growing IT industry, expsts from all parts of the world visit Bangalore, hence giving a better cosmopolitan environment. The Government is not ultra-conservative, therefore giving way to a liberal culture.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bangalore? Is there any advice you can give?

There is oversupply of apartments, flats for rent in Bangalore due to the real estate boom. It is relatively easier to find accommodation in Bangalore. Though online (magicbricks.com, 99acres.com, housing.com etc.) is a faster way of finding options, I'd suggest walking around in your area of choice and explore houses with 'Tolet' boards. You can avoid brokerage that way. Even owners tend to shy away from Agents nowadays. As students, it works cheaper to rent out an entire apartment with 2 or 3 bedrooms and share rent with roommates. Olx.com may help in finding roommates.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Bangalore due to its cosmopolitan crowd, provides all kind of food options, everywhere. Native food items (kannadiga style) like Bissi bela bath, Donne briyani, ragi modde, akki roti are a big hit with everyone, besides the popular south indian idli, dosa and filer coffee. Kanndiga/Managalorean cuisine has a bit of sweet taste is all dishes. If you prefer spicier options go for Andhra or Chettinad style. North Indian options are available everywhere, with cooks from North. So, the taste is not much different from North. Besides there North East food is popluar nowadays. Chinese  food is prevalent in every corner, but the taste is significantly Indian than Chinese :)

What places would you recommend visiting in Bangalore?

I would suggest visiting places 'around' Bangalore that 'In' Bangalore. Move towards Mysore or Hassan and there will be tonnes of options for nature lovers, trekkers and campers. Inside the city, the parks and greenery is dying and water bodies have vanished. The usual tourist attractions are all listed in the Tourist website and guides. Nagerhole, Kabini, Coorg, Hassan are places worth exploring. Within Bangalore, Indoor sports culture has picked up in the recent times, but mostly limited to Badminton, Swimming, Futsal, Volleyball, Basketball and at times Squash and Tennis. Bangalore has a culture of Marathons and Cubbon Park is the abode of joggers.

Is it good to eat out in Bangalore? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Eating out is the best way for entertainment in Bangalore. Chruchstreet and Brigade Road are still good for grabbing a drink without blowing a big hole in your pocket. Frazer Town, CMR Road (Kalyan Nagar) are my favourite spot. I personally enjoy dining at the Grill House near Ulsoor lake.

Indra Nagar provides lot of fine dining options. I have not explored much of Jayanagar, but being the largest residential hub of Bangalore, Jayanagar may have more options than the rest of Bangalore put together.

Is the nightlife good in Bangalore? Where is good to go?

Every locality has its own pockets for nightlife. Bangalore has no restrictions on alchohol hence it has always been the pub capital of India, though the pubs of Bangalore are a far cry from the ultra modern ones you find in the rest of the world. Indra Nagar (100 ft road), Bridgade Road, Churchstreet etc. are the usual suspects. HSR Layout & Koramangala are the other areas. There are restrictions on timings at many localities, so after 12 everything will shut down.

What advice would you give future students heading to Bangalore?

Read a lot about the city. Establish local contacts and interact before coming to the city. There is lot more to the city than what you can find in the internet or books. Overall a good city for the young crowd.
