Experience in Aylesbury, United Kingdom by Hollie
What is it like to live in Aylesbury? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Aylesbury is a pretty town in an absolutely stunning area that I one day hope to move back to. I would 100% recommend it.
What is the student lifestyle like in Aylesbury?
Aylesbury really isn't much of a student town so the lifestyle is much more likely to be typical of the British general public. Whilst there are many high schools in and around Aylesbury, college/university students are going to be a good deal less common.
How much does it cost to live in Aylesbury?
Aylesbury is extremely expensive to live in as it is in Buckinghamshire, a much sought after county due to its grammar schools. It's also located in the Chilterns, an area of outstanding natural beauty, with brilliant transport links for commuting to London. All of these things you are going to see reflected in house prices. This doesn't mean the area is completely unaffordable, but it does mean that you might find yourself getting a good deal less for your money than you might expect to get elsewhere.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Aylesbury? Is there any advice you can give?
It may be more difficult to find accommodation in Aylesbury than some other towns in Britain, though I'm sure there will always be people with spare rooms and if not, try some of the surrounding towns/villages that will have good transport links. If you go across the border to Bedfordshire then house prices should go down a fair amount.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food in Aylesbury is very typical of the rest of Britain. There are many excellent quality pubs around where you can try traditional pub food - fish and chips, Sunday Roast, ham egg and chips etc. etc.
What places would you recommend visiting in Aylesbury?
As someone who loves animals, the Bucks Goat Centre is one of my favourite places to visit. It can be found in Stoke Mandeville, right outside of Aylesbury, and for a very small entry price you can feed and pet the goats and other farm animals. Similarly: The Horse Trust in Princes Risborough, Mead Open Farm in Billington and Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital's Visitors' Centre in Haddenham.
Is it good to eat out in Aylesbury? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
The Works is a really nice (if a little pricey) ice cream parlour in the town centre with cool interior design. A great place for taking visitors.
The Woolpack, just outside of Aylesbury (Stoke Mandeville) is a lovely place to get dinner/drinks, occasionally also hosting evening events.
Double Eight is the best Chinese takeaway I have ever had and I cannot recommend the king prawn chow mein enough!
The Hundred of Ashendon is a bit of a way out of Aylesbury, on the way to Oxford, but 100% worth the drive. Though it is a bit more expensive, the prices match the quality of the food. With the menu changing every day, the food is always locally sourced, seasonal and most of all delicious. If you're someone who cares about where your food comes from and are keen to try new flavours then you'll love Matt's cooking. It also boasts a really cool interior, mixing traditional English pub with some trendy and more modern design elements. And after you've finished your meal, Ashendon is the perfect place to walk it off!
Jack and Alice in Tring is my favourite place to get brunch - particularly if you are vegetarian as there are more options on the menu than I've ever been used to! They also do incredible hot chocolates piled high with marshmallows.
Is the nightlife good in Aylesbury? Where is good to go?
As Aylesbury isn't a traditional student town, you may be slightly more hard pressed to find places to go out.
Fever & Boutique is the biggest club in the town centre (big meaning popular as it's pretty tiny) and a good night if it gets full enough as they then open up the top floor which is reserved for the cheesy tunes.
If you get a big enough group of you to make a taxi to Milton Keynes affordable, then you can go to Pink Punters which is huge and incredible. A gay club during the week, Sunday nights are 'straight nights' and the most popular time for people to go. Still the best club I've ever been to.
For a more chilled out night out, The Bell (Wetherspoons) is always a great place for students to drink. Shoot Pool is a more indy alternative, with live bands, pool tables and a cool vibe.
What advice would you give future students heading to Aylesbury?
Make the most of all the beautiful scenery and if you're getting fed up of the quiet, rural life then head over to Milton Keynes, Oxford or London, all of which are near by with great transport links!
