What is it like to live in Ávila? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Ávila is a beautiful place and is great if you're looking for a small town that isn't too rural. Whilst there is not a lot to explore in the city itself, there are plenty of tapas bars and it's so easy to hop on a train to Madrid for the weekend. I'd definitely recommend Ávila if you're looking to improve your Spanish and want to avoid touristy areas.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ávila?

There wasn't a massive student scene in Ávila as there is only one small university, but Salamanca is so close by and is a great city for students.

How much does it cost to live in Ávila?

Ávila is one of the cheapest cities I've visited in Spain. Our rent was only 150€ a month and a weekly food shop cost around 20€. You can also eat out really cheaply: a caña is about 1-2€ and you normally get a free tapa of your choice.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ávila? Is there any advice you can give?

Join the Facebook groups for auxiliares de conversación before you arrive if you want to find a housemate. You can also help each other out and they are often auxiliares from the previous year that can recommend their old flats or put you in contact with landlords.

What places would you recommend visiting in Ávila?

Definitely walk the walls. If you register as a resident of the city, you get to visit them for free as often as you like. If you get the chance to then, I'd recommend going to the Sierra de Gredos, on the border with Extremadura. It's a gorgeous mountain range and there are some great walks and little villages to explore.

Is it good to eat out in Ávila? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

The best place was Kedada which was really cheap and had a good variety of tapas. Also try Charlotte, Café Teatro Delicatessen, Caramel and Divinos.

What advice would you give future students heading to Ávila?

Take advantage of the fact you're so close to Madrid and travel as much as possible. You'll get to see so many amazing places!
