Small towns can be really boring. But that's not the case of Alcobaça, at least for tourism.
The city has one of the greatest and oldests monastries in Portugal, considered World's Heritage by UNESCO. It was built in the 12th century by Cister's monks, who lived there for many years, praying.
Inside the monastry there is a nice garden, towers and a church, where D. Pedro first and his lover, who was killed by his father's army, D. Ines de Castro are buried. Their story is like a portuguese Romeo and Juliet and it ended in Alcobaça.
What else to see?
Alcobaça was built around the monastry and it's a very small village. Still, there are some things to see there.
There are many cute and cheap restaurants in town where you can have some amazing portuguese dishes, such as Codfish, Calf meat and more.
Also, during the weekends there is an antiques fair just outside the monastry, where you can find many intresting things.
