Life At Tbilisi State Medical University (TMSU)

I would like to share with you my student experience at the Tbilisi State Medical University. I came all the way from India to get my medical degree at TSMU in order to achieve my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. In my previous article, I briefly mentioned the cultural differences and all the other things that I encountered when I arrived in Tbilisi for the first time.

Tbilisi State Medical University is situated in Tbilisi which is the capital of Georgia. It is one of the most prominent universities in the Caucasus region. Despite its location, a little far from the heart of the city, it is well connected with frequent trains, buses, minivans and taxis. The university has a Latin motto: "Per Traditiones Ad Futurum" which means "With Traditions To The Future". It stands true as the university was built in the early 19th century and stands without losing its pride till date in the whole Caucasus region.

The university offers various courses with the main one being the "Diploma in Medicine", followed by various other courses such as Pharmacy, Nursing, Emergency Medicine, etc. 10% of students are foreign, most of them are from India (including me) and also from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Triniad and Tobago, etc. The university is also recognized by some of the world's renowned organizations such as UNESCO, WHO, EMSA, EUA, etc. Students can enrol as a part of students exchange program and admission procedures are on the university´s website.

The annual fee for the university is not that expensive. It comes to about $3000- $3500 at present which can be paid as two semesters from the second year onwards. The university follows the European Union syllabus which makes it easier for the foreign students. The overall duration in case of the MD (Diploma In Medicine) course is 6 years which is divided into 2 years of basics, 1 year of preclinical practice and 3 years of clinical courses.

In each class, there are around 10-14 students. The infrastructure of the classes may not be the best in the world but it is definitely a good one to study in. The classes are furnished and equipped with heating facilities to withstand the freezing conditions during winter. The teachers of the international sector are qualified in English despite the fact that the local students do their degrees in their own mother tongue, Georgian. The university has a library which has a collection of medical and medical related books in English and other foreign languages. There are reading halls which give the students a peaceful place to study. There is also an additional computer room with an internet connection for any additional references.

The university has its links with many clinics around the city which enables the students to get some clinical knowledge during their study time. The university also holds an annual cultural meeting for the foreign students which enables the students from different cultures to put forward their knowledge. There are also many conferences where many professors from the entire world visit the university and deliver lectures to the students and thus giving them a wide exposure to their field. EMSA, which also acts as the TSMU Students Self Government Union, conducts many seminars and conferences where students are given a chance to participate and share their thoughts on their field of interest with others. To conclude, TSMU is a good place to study. Enjoy it and make your dreams come true!

Hi Manoj, Thanks for the detailed explanation. It was quite useful. I have been looking around to find out if TSMU has lost it accreditation or not. I was told by one of my colleagues and would like to know further about that. Is this university still a valid one? I have been thinking about studying there but i am hearing mixed reviews and yours is definitely a positive one. The other reviews have been negative. So confused now. Regards, M

Hiii Meenakshi , Thank you for your response. T.S.M.U according to my experience has become more advanced in syllabus and its overall academic rebuilding more than 50% in the past years. The review you heard about the university is True if and only if u don't follow the exact protocol to apply to the university. It has been recogonised by MCI and You can start your career After clearing the Screening Test, but before you must apply for an eligibility certificate issued by MCI. So its absolutely your decision!!!! Regards - Manoj

hi want to know that is there security for girls ?? are they discipilned well ??? pls reply

  • flag-in Manoj Pradeep 11 years ago

There is no problem from the society and if in case a problem arises then it is probably because of the particular girls character and lack of self control. As they are exposed to an environment where there is no one to control them, there are girls who take this for granted and get themselves into a lot of trouble. There are many who get themselves exploited due to their own behavior.

Hey Manoj. Your review was really good. Can you please tell me the yearly fee (in Rs) and the approximate cost for getting my MBBS degree there?? Where do the students live and how is the hostel life there?? I read in the newspaper that the South Indian students are given special south Indian food. How good is that food and is there good security for girls??

  • flag-in Manoj Pradeep 11 years ago

The university fees will be approximately 2.5 lakhs per annum and others expenses are entirely, on the way of life style you choose. Check the comments before for the safety related question, I have given enough explanation according to my point of view!! Thank u.

Hello Akshaj, Doctor of medicine is a post graduation degree that is issued after ug. The degree you will be offered after 6 years of course is Diploma of Medicine. Upon getting a eligibility certificate from the MCI the degree is valued in India. MCI is not difficult under the conditions that you work hard... You can find me in facebook in the same name.

  • flag-cg Generalpretty Kazala 6 years ago

if I want to do the registration to study among his university what can I do

  • flag- Maria P 6 years ago

Hi, MD in US is Doctor of Medicine since it’s a masters level.. students over there study 4 years of pre medicine ( Bachelor degree) and do MCAT to get in to the MD program. Then the residency for 3 to 5 years depends on the speciality. Internal medicine, family medicine etc 3, OB/GYN 4, Surgery 5 etc. they do USMLE 1 & 2 while in the Med school.

  • flag- Maria P 6 years ago

Hi, I forgot to mention that the students in US has a total of 7 to 8 years of education before they finish the medical school. 4 years undergraduate and 4 years of MD and 3 to 5 years of residency. If you want to do fellowship again another 2 to 3 years. Cardiology is 3 years of fellowship. If you want to do more specialization like in Stent or pace maker etc, another 1 to 2 years of studying. It takes several years in US to become a doctor.
