Beerporng tournaments

Hello, everybody! I would like to share with one of our Erasmus mobility activities during our stay in Eskisehir. Beer pong tournaments were held every week on Thursday evenings. It is the best time to have such activity because fewer people have lessons on Fridays.

Tournaments were held in Dublin Pub, near the main shopping mall of Eskisehir, Espark. Mostly we were gathering around ten in the evening. These beer pong tournaments were happening thanks to ESN Anadolu and Dublin pub managers deal. With ESN card we were getting one free glass of beer. Moreover, if you want to play beer pong, you must pay a fee of 10 Turkish Liras.

Introducing beer pong

Beer pong is a drinking game, in which two teams are playing per round. The primary goal is to hit a ball to the opposite side of the table. It means, if you strike the ball to the inside of the cup, your opponents must drink the glass of beer. When they have drunk the beer, the cup must be removed from the table. It is possible to play beer pong with six or ten cups, formed in a triangle. The winner is the team which strikes all of the opponents cups.

How did we play beer pong?

To tell the truth, we were playing following standard beer pong rules. The main difference between the beer pong we played and a normal one is that we did not fill full cups of beer. We were using just 1/3 cups of beer. The main reason why it was like this, is that alcohol is very expensive in Turkey. To tell the truth, one glass of beer in cafe costs from 11 Turkish Lira, we could say it is 3 euros.  The winners of beer pong tournament got very fancy drinks!

Dublin Pub had few tables which we were using. However, they were not standard ones, but they were useful to play beer pong. Before the game, one person from ESN Anadolu was randomly choosing people from the list and making up the teams. After that, he chooses the team in the top of the list and the one from the bottom of the list. All the tournaments were held like this.

My very first time playing beer pong

From the very first match, I was excited to try it out. I have been wondering how I will play and if I will be successful. I remember the first time was very splendid. I did not win, but I have lost in second round. Not because of lack of knowledge, but because of our tough opponents. After the first match, I started to find out beer pong techniques. Even after, I was not a winner, but it was very enjoyable.

Why do I like playing beer pong?

For some people the reason can be to get drunk, to have a good time, to relax or to meet new people. For me, the primary reason was to meet new people. It is an excellent opportunity to have a talk with people you do not know yet. But for sure, even after beer pong tournaments if I meet them in the street, I would offer to have a talk with a cup of tea!

There are also some negative things about beer pong that I have realised writing this article. While you are playing the game, the balls are striking the beer inside the cup. Moreover, it means that they are always dirty even if you put them in the water. And of course if you drink large amounts of beer, you will forget the evenings for sure.

To summarise, I was glad that we had such activities that gathered around the Erasmus people. I can imagine it is quite difficult to host it, but it is worth.
