Hello, welcome and thanks for checking out my profile.
How did I end up in Spain? Or rather, how did I end up in Valladolid? Why am I not in the south of Spain next to the beach wearing sandals and socks and red like a tomato with sunbrurn.
Don't be nosy. What is more important is why I have decided to become a freelance English teacher.
I am not an entrepreneur, I am an English teacher. I have been teaching English for many years and have learned 6 lessons.
1: BOOKS
My first job as a teacher was to teach students of all ages. The owner of the academy gives me a book the first few days and says 'it starts on page one and continues from there'. Lesson 1: NEVER USE BOOKS.
2: GROUP SIZE
One summer, in Valladolid, I taught groups of 10 students. We were advised to do group tasks because the group was large. Lesson 2: small groups of 5 or 6 at a stretch.
3: LEVELS
In an academy in Santander, we had groups of 6 students; it was great. However, we had a problem: María José was an advanced student and Roberto was a beginner. Lesson 3 was to make sure the groups are at the same level.
4: NATIVES
Many students complain when I correct something they have learned at school. To teach English, it is crucial that you do not teach mistakes. Lesson 4 is hiring teachers with a native level of English.
5: PRICE
In my last job I had before going freelance in Valladolid, a student told me how much she paid for her English classes and almost gave me a heart attack. Lesson 5: do the classes cheap.
6: ENVIRONMENT
Teaching English does not have to be a punishment. The only way to motivate students is when they enjoy classes. Lesson 6: make the classes dynamic and fun.
