Yes there is a basketball team of the city called U Mobiltelco-> http://www.u-mobitelco.ro/en/who-we-are.php and each faculty usually has a basketball team:)

The new year stars on 3 October for Babes-Bolyai. You can check your timetable but there aren't classes in that day.
