Livin' la vida Erasmus!

Hello!! I plan to travel to Cairo, and I would very much like to know experiences of people who have been there and can advise us :)

We are a Spanish couple of 26 years, and we do not know the city or anyone there! Our idea would be to travel freely, without tours or agencies, but we do not know if it is perhaps too adventurous! Another thing: is it the zone between Ad-Duqqi and Downtown Cairo safe and kind of international?
