The eternal question - flat ore residence? I would vote for both if I could. I think you should definetely try both. But anyway I'll explain both options with all details in case you have to choose one.

The student residence is perfect for the beginning when you don't know people. There you can meet people from all over the world. You are never alone and the best part - it's a lot cheaper than any other student flat. I pay 185 euro everything included (even internet! ). Depending on the size of your room you can pay more or less than this. The most you can pay is 200 euro for enormous room or some 160-170 for a small room. All the residence in Germany have a website that usually include the name of the city and the word studentenwerk. The residences usually you have them calssified by region. In the one I'm staying is the most centric one. There some of them that are farther away. I advice you to talk to students from your university that went in the same city in the past years. It could help a lot. As I told you before in the residence you're never alone. There is one small bad thing about it. In the residence people are usually classified by nationality, region or tradition. So spanish people with spanish, italian or portuguese and so on. In the residence I only speak spanish and english. There is absolutely no chance to practice some german. Another bad thing is that once you are in a residence flat you can only change before the end of semester, so think well! I'm quite pleased with mine, but I wanted to change to a flat with german students and it was too many things to do (I didn't have time). In the residence you have to buy plates, pots, microwave and everything you need to survive. You usually don't have it there.

In a student flat you most of times have all these things and if you don't like it you can leave. In the same webpage of the residence of your university you can find privat flats and rooms to rent. If you talk to the university residence I think they can help you. And even if you stay in a student flat you can always go to the residence to party, it is full everytime. The secret is to have the flat in the center. You can also search for a flat in the university webpage. There is always a place in the webpage where they place announcements.

There are some of you that will live with there match or love partner. I suggest you to stay in a flat. If you have any doubts just ask in english or spanish. I can also help you guiding with your webpage if you have a problem with german. Good luck!
