Hi guys! As Erasmus students studying in Spain (for at least a year?) would you keep your old bank account from your country or would you try and open one in Spain? I'll be doing my Masters here (for 1 year) and it would suit me better to have a Spanish bank account, less comission and transaction charges plus I would be looking for a part-time job. Trying to speak to some of the banks has been unhelpful as most of them said they don't open bank accounts for non residents. Would you know a way to do this? Where exactly should I look for a document that attests that I'm not a resident? Everything's confusing haha, I hope you have a better time with it than I am.
All the best,
Silvia

I hope you have started the process for getting NIE number, this is a requirement to be here legally. Most banks need NIE number but if its absolutely urgent you can start an account in Caixa Catalunya bank, they are (as far as I know) the only ones that allow you to open account with your passport. You could also try Sabadell but I am doubtful here. If you are above 25 then you need to pay a tax for this.

Heya! Thanks for the reply! :)
I went to La Caixa and Caixa Catalunya and they both said they don't open accounts for non residents, even without asking for the NIE number. Finally, Santander said they require the passport, some proof of address and proof of student status. I will get the latter from the university and I know they require that sort of document if you want to apply for the NIE as well, and as I'll need a part time job I would be looking at obtaining that also.
