Most of Lisbon universities offer accommodation in student dorms, and this is the easiest and cheapest option. However, you can also look for apartments to share, check: local newspapers, websites like Erasmusu, or pin-walls inside university buildings. Sharing a flat is really common in Portugal. Lisbon is the most expensive city in Portugal because it’s the capital and the prices can range between 150 euros to 400 euros, everything depends on the location, facilities and how early you start to look for your future home.

One of the most important things for you to know about accommodation is that you need to look for it as soon as you can. Make sure you see the house in person, and not just pictures of it. The neighbourhood is also really important, don’t forget that you will live in the capital, so some places can not be that safe. Also, be careful with the contract, if it’s written in Portuguese, ask someone to check it for you.

The best places to live in Lisbon

  • Saldanha
  • Alameda
  • Arroios
  • Campo Pequeno
  • Telheiras (a little further)
  • Bairro Alto (the parties’ place)
  • Marquês de Pombal
  • Benfica (considered one of the cheapest places)

You can find different houses close to the universities, but the area will depend on your faculty, because they are all over the city. But if you can’t find anything close to your university, because sometimes they can be more expensive, don’t worry because the transports in Lisbon are really good, and sometimes you can also even go walking.

If you are looking for accommodation in Lisbon, remember that the agents of the Erasmusu Bookings department can help you find the accommodation that best suits you.

Tips to find accommodation in Lisbon

  • Try to see the room in person before renting it, or try to ask someone to do it for you. Sometimes the pictures on the internet are often misleading, and it’s much better and safer if you see it in person. However, websites such as Erasmusu and Spotahome have a system of verified accommodation that makes renting your future home easier without visiting. Make sure to check them!

  • Contact your university to help looking for Rooms, they usually have rooms available in university dorms. If you don’t want to stay in a dorm, you can try and check the adverts of houses.

  • Keep in mind that in Portugal it is very common to share apartments with the landlord, so if you want to avoid this kind of accommodation, look for flats with students. You can look for roommates on Erasmusu.
