The essence of Coimbra

The city of students

Coimbra has a long academic tradition, seen in the cloths, habits and parties.

It´s not exactly a big city, but the streets of Praça da Republica and Baixa are never deserted, and I feel safe walking there alone at night. Since we are talking about Portugal, the gastronomy is great and cheap, with fado and beer everywhere! Here is the essential stuff you need to know:

  • Rooms are usually 150€, more or less.
  • Food can be found at Continente, Jumbo, Pingo Doce and other supermarkets.
  • Public transportation can be seen at http://www.smtuc.pt/index.php, one single trip bought at the bus is 1, 20€ but you can buy a ticket with 11 trips for 5, 70€.
  • Academic parties are commonly known has "convivios", but the 2 main ones are Latada, at the first semester, and Queima das Fitas at the second semester. You will encounter "praxes" which are traditional practices that the "caloiro" must endure to become a "doutor". You can find out most of it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praxe or you can look for the "código da Praxe".

  • Most of the time it´s sunny, but it also rains a lot at winter. Snow is extremely rare, and it never goes below 0 degrees.

Well, I could go on and on about my 3 year experience as a student at Coimbra, but I´m expecting you to see it with your own eyes.

I hope the information was somehow useful, good luck and lots of good time well spent.
