Hey I'm going to be living in Lissabon from August. I would like to live close to a beach that has good waves for a beginner since I'd like to learn how to surf. What's the area I should be looking for? Thanks!

Hey

Lisbon has no beaches for surf. Ericeira is well known for surf, and there is other beaches close to the capital with same purpose. You should be awere of transportation because train and subway could not reach the location that you pretend. (sorry for my English) Maybe this can help you:

heyy

well if you are going to be here during the winter season (let's say october - february) it is possible to surf in places much closer than Ericeira or Praia Grande (West coast). During the winter, people usually go to Carcavelos, S. Pedro do Estoril, Poça, etc.

We receive good swells from NW, W that give us the chance to surf in those beaches. This coast is turned to South, so it is more "protected" from the huge winter swells that sometimes make surfing impossible in the West coast.

If you are going to stay in Lisbon and you want to go to Carcavelos or S.Pedro you would just have to take the subway + train.

Of course you can also go to Ericeira for example (and you have to). It is a little bit more complicated, but totally worth. In that case, I have no clue about the transportation, probably buses...

Take a look at google maps and see the difference between Carcavelos and Ericeira for example, and you will understand the different positions of the beaches.

Have fun!
