My Erasmus Experience in Vienna, Austria by Louis

Why did you choose to go to Vienna, Austria?

I didn't have many options because my field of study is pretty specific, but I chose to attend the department in Vienna as it's reputable.

How long is your stay? What financial aid do you receive?

I'm here for 4 months (from March to June) and I receive more or less 300 euros a month.

What's the student vibe like in Vienna?

There's a really good student vibe and you'll meet a lot of people, especially if you take part in some of the activities organised by the Erasmus Student Network as soon as you arrive.

Would you recommend the city and university of Vienna to other students?

Yes.

What's the food like in Austria?

Austrian food isn't excellent but it is good. Like in every big city, you can find all types of food for all types of budgets.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Vienna?

No, but I would recommend getting there early enough to get in touch with student letting agencies like WIHAST, Home4Students, OeAD etc...

What are living costs like in Vienna?

More of less the same as my home country, Belgium.

What's it like learning a language there? Have you done a language course organised by the university?

My lessons were in English, I didn't take up any specific language courses, and I don't speak German. However, you can get by perfectly well by speaking English in Vienna.

What is the most economical way to get to Vienna from your home town?

If you or someone you know can drive, I'd say it's best to go by car. But if not, I'd recommend catching a flight to Bratislava as flights are cheaper to there than to Vienna. From there, you just need to get an hour and a half bus ride to Vienna, which costs 7 euros.

Where do you recommend going out in Vienna?

Lots of Erasmus students go to an international bar called Travelshack. Other than that, there are tons of really good clubs in the city- it would be hard to list them all! There is definitely not a shortage of places to party.

And to eat in Vienna? What are your favourite places?

I like to eat in kebab shops or in a Wursthaus when coming back from a night out. If you want to eat a cheap Schnitzel there's the Votiv café just next to university. There are plenty of good places!

What cultural places do you recommend going to see?

There's loads of museums for all tastes in Vienna. On a sunny day, I recommend going for a walk in the Museums Quartier to see the Belvedere, Hundertwasserhaus, and Schönbrunn Palace. Given its location, Vienna is also an ideal starting point to visit several cities like Prague or Budapest.
