Why did you choose to go to Valmiera, Latvia?

I wanted to experience living in a country that isn't a Western European country seeing as I live in the Netherlands. Also, I wanted to live in a place surrounded by forests.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

The scholarship is for 4 months and I received around 200 euros because I already receive student finance in the Netherlands.

What is the student lifestyle like in Valmiera?

It takes a bit getting used to over there. There's not much international occurrences there. Because it is a small city, it is best to make friends and hangout with them, and make sure you travel through the country. In the weekends try to visit the capital for a city experience.Furthermore, living costs in Valmiera are relatively cheap so students (especially from western countries) can live well there.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Valmiera to other students?

I would recommend it to other students if they like to experience a new culture. Keep in mind that it is a bit more conservative than for example the Netherlands, England and Germany. The city is surrounded by nature which is very beautiful so Hiking is a must.

What is the food like?

Food lovers will eat a lot for a very low price and it's delicious. Lots of meat however, and fatty food. But it is possible to eat healthy if you want to

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Valmiera?

Dorm rooms were offered by the school itself.

How much does it cost to live in Valmiera?

I rented an apartment with a friend and it cost 150 euros per person. Eating out costs between 3 to 6 euros and the most expensive restaurants there costs around 6 to 8 euros for a main dish. 5 liter bottled water costs 1 euro and beer is also cheap. Grocery shopping can be a bit pricey compared to other things there but still relatively cheap.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

The language is hard, but on exchange you can take the Latvian language course for 6 ects.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Valmiera from your city?

by Plane and bus.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Valmiera?

Klondaika for pool and beer (if you like playing pool it is the only place that has pool tables). and 1 other bar/club that is very famous in Valmiera (ask the students for the name)

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Valmiera?

I forgot the names sorry, but every where is delicious no matter what.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The whole natural park that the city is in but that's about it.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Valmiera in the future?

Be careful when talking about homosexuality. Latvia is new to being independent and some people there still have soviet mentality. The Russians who live in Latvia are not very well liked by Latvians. They are also the most racists. Latvians aren't that open in the beginning so if you feel excluded, try to make yourself heard (take initiative to making contact and talking to them). After they open up they will become real friends. Their culture and independence is very important to them so try to learn some of it.
