I'm a 19 year old boy looking for an apartment in Nice since I'm going to university.

You know what. You need a little fashion education first and foremost. Yes, yes, there are many guys (and girls) who aren't into this aspect of it but it's important.

The following need to be avoided (there are most likely more):

OVER SHOPPING-
Many times what ends up happening is people go to the shopping mall (or 5th Avenue or Les Champs Élysées) and start y buying a large number of clothes. For many of us shopping is euphoric- to the point where we end up buying more than we actually want and end up not using them. this results in a large amount of time and money spent.

BUYING THINGS BECAUSE THEIR 'COOL' and not because you actually like/identify with them-
Another important reason to do research (mostly on the Internet by yourself and with the help of FREE shopping assistants) is to know exactly (or more or less) what you want. In the end of the day it will take ACTUALLY buying clothes and trying them out as well to determine what your true preferences are (notice how I used the word preference and not 'style' I consider these two to be different) but research on the Internet can allow you to explore a wide range of aesthetics in your imagination.

Many times what happens is people are SO caught up with looking like whatever their community deems as 'cool' that they are capable of changing the way they speak, change their taste in music, changing the way the act and of course changing the way they dress. Naturally you end up buying clothing that you don't REALLY identify with and it leaves you feeling dissatisfied and not fully 'yourself' which brings me to the next point.

CONFIDENCE or THE LACT THERE OF-
Clothing is supposed to help you be yourself not SWALLOW you. It doesn't matter how well dressed you are, if your not comfortable in your own skin (or in this case your clothes) you won't allow your more confident self shine through- and I know it sounds like a Disney Channel movie but, you know what? Confidence IS one of the most attractive parts of any man or woman.

Now that we have a few of those cleared up let me not try to guide you.

First, try a FREE personal shopper-
There are a few sites on the Internet like thread.com that offer FREE personal shopping services. They are easy, they are cool and they'll help you try out different things and help you refine your preferences. The truth is acquiring style (not preference) is QUITE a journey. There are going to be bumps in the road. But don't worry, with every step you take your refining yourself. These personal shoppers are a GREAT handy tool.

Good old fashion, FASHION MAGAZINES-
Pick up the latest issue of GQ, or you know what? Why waste money? Check out free online websites like GQ.com and MrPorter.com you DON'T have to buy anything at first but just going through the clothing and allowing yourself to consider (maybe even fantasize) about some of the selection will help you refine (or at least Try out) many more things to see what you like.

Watch a fashion, or 2 or 3 by Brands and Designers who have more or less the aesthetic your looking for-
Have you heard of Berluti? You said you wanted a super sophisticated look, right? You don't have to fork thousands of dollars on these things but again, education and (imaginary) exploration. Do the same for Dolce and Gabbanna, Givenchy is my personal favorite.

Finally, Trial and Error-
You'll try a few things in the beginning but there will always be something wrong. Maybe it will be the fault of your actually clothes or your own confidence. It's fun to see things online but you need to try them out in real life as well. You'll try them on then you might think after a few months of wearing that clothing item 'you know what? I liked this at the beginning but I'm not into this anymore. In fact, I'm not into this at all!', I for instance NEVER wear hoodies anymore- I stopped when I was 14.

I hope I was some form of help at least, I don't expect to solve your problems I'm just giving my own 2 cents.

On Style vs (simple) Preference:
Oh, one more thing. I wanted to explain why I kept on using the word prefer me and not style. You see first and foremost, one thing that we ALL have as human beings is preference- which is liking one thing over another. But style is a superior preference (not to say that just cause I like Eminem and you like lil Wayne I have better taste than you- that's not what I mean). I define a man of style/taste as someone who has been exposed to a WIDE variety of aesthetics (from fashion to food to music) and has his OWN preferences based on greater exposure.
Imagine for a second, If you in your w tire life have only been exposed to Eminem and Bow wow and have never heard any other rapper OR any other genre of music, then you still have your preferences BUT some one with taste has a deeper and wider understanding of Eminem and Bow wow because they have been exposed to other rappers and other artists from other genres an
