Generally, what is Leiden University like?

I participated as an Erasmus student so I had the chance to follow a variety of courses from different faculties. However this might lead to misunderstangins as each faculty has a different building and timetable so I needed personally to form my schedule so as to avoid having 2 courses by time.

What are the facilities like?

Leiden is a small and easy city which provides facilities especially for people with disabilities. Moreover there are many university libraries as also a student sport center. It is needed to be noticed that Netherlands is a country of debit card so even if you want just a coffee, cash is not always accepted.

What are the tutors like?

In general tutors are professional with a kind of distance from their students. They are helpful to an extent.

Are the lessons easy in Leiden University?

it depends on the faculty and if it is relevant with your studies in the home university. Ι noticed that all my final grades came out after my participation in 2 exams per lesson which means a lot of study and preparation. Ιn general the courses are challenging but with a good plan, any difficulty can be avoided.

Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?

External activities as excursions and speeches have been held during the whole semester such as visiting museums (department of History of Art for instance).

Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?

The use of online material such as articles etc at the beginning was kind of difficult since I was not so familiar within but at the end it seemed convinient. To be honest I would rather having more assesments with my personal research than studying fixed meanings for my exams.

Are there any stories you can share?

A tricky situation is that Leiden Universiteit does not guarantee accomodation for all students so you have to be prepared in case you find an apartment in a different city or a suburb. Another solution is to subrent with other tenants a house. Despite this negative fact I had an interesting and intense experience throughout my mobility. I also had the chance to visit some countries with a low budget as also explore Netherlands. Finally I met so many different nationalities and made new friends around the world that I will keep the contact even after my departure.
