Erasmus Experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina by Frederic

Why did you choose to go to Buenos Aires, Argentina?

For two reasons, obviously to improve my spanish but also because I believe it was a once in a lifetime occasion so I wanted it to be a great change.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I've been there for 6 months. I got from my university something around 1500 euros; covering the plane.

What is the student lifestyle like in Buenos Aires?

It varies a lot! On the overall it's quite similar to the european lifestyle with a bunch of students partying a lot; some others being more calm and so on... Really you can find every type of lifestyle. From the student who have two part time jobs to the one who miss classes and parties too much.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Buenos Aires to other students?

Beunos Aires is something to live. On overall it's not beautiful (of course there are wonderful areas) but it's really a cool place where you can do nearly whatever you like. Argentinians love sport (football) and parties so you'll enjoy a really great time there. For the university it really depends on what you look for. If you want strong classes with quite a high pressure: UADE is for you. If you want a more relax time, I know others were more easy.

What is the food like?

Barbecues are great of course, but there is not a high diversity of products.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Buenos Aires?

Funny story in 6 months I've lived in 3 different places.

  1. University: around 300€
  2. Flat for three: around 250€
  3. Room in a student house: around 350€

How much does it cost to live in Buenos Aires?

500€ for the living. More for parties and so on.

But I've been there 4 years ago and things change really fast over there.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

There were some courses but I didn't need them. The language was quite easy to get as south americans tend to speak more slowly than the spanish.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Buenos Aires from your city?

Plane.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Buenos Aires?

La bomba del tiempo.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Buenos Aires?

Not even one. There are some good restaurants around the harbor or in recoleta.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The market of San Telmo is really nice. Recoleta is also a place to visit. But I wouldn't focus on special places. Just walking through Buenos Aires is really something.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Buenos Aires in the future?

Don't stress with administratives: they are slow indeed but helpful when you really need them.

Watch your pockets. There are not a lot of violence (inside of Buenos Aires) but a lot of thieves. And good ones.
