What is it like to live in Athens? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Leaving in Athens is very beautiful. As long as you are a student you will see that your co-students will be friendly, English-speaking and very welcoming as all the Greeks. However, because of the political turbulence of Greece the capital is affected. This does not mean that it is a dangerous place! No! It is safe. It means though that you might find the university closed by the authorities because of political reasons. Night life is excellent and the Greeks always love going out. It is a busy city, with much much life and many nice cafes or bars where you can drink while seeing the Acropolis.

What is the student lifestyle like in Athens?

Students go out a lot. For coffee or drinks. There are some parties too, but not always successful. Facilities for studying in the University are much poorer than in other European countries. So, if one does not like studying alone she will find herself in a not so nice library but with good company. There are many concerts, cinemas and theaters. If one has a taste for alternative cinema she will find what she is looking for in Athens. Students like gothering together and having discussions about all possible issues.

How much does it cost to live in Athens?

About 800/month - rent-going out, etc.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Athens? Is there any advice you can give?

It not too difficult. Close to the center it is more cheap (however the buildings are old and it is more dangerous). Do not stay in the campus (you can do better)!

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is very good. Street food is fine with 3 euros most students get their "gyros" which is "traditional greek" and extremely tasty.

What places would you recommend visiting in Athens?

Visti Exarchia for alternative bars and clubs. Visit Monastiraki and Thision for the excellent view of Acropolis and the ruins around (extremely romantic). Visit Gazi for the gay friendly clubs. Visit Kolokotroni (close to Monastiraki) for coffee.

Is it good to eat out in Athens? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is good, but you need almost 10 euros for full dinner.

Is the nightlife good in Athens? Where is good to go?

It is excellent. Most alternative students like Exarchia, Kolokotroni, Agia Eirinis, Gazi (especially gay friendly), Thisio.

What advice would you give future students heading to Athens?

Enjoy going out, visit cinemas and museums, go to all galleries and art places, visit every single archaeological spot (you will feel perfect), meet Greek students they are friendly and English speaking and try to make the best of your experience. The University will have purer services compared to your country of you come from Europe and more functional difficulties than other European institutions. Relax and enjoy the sun and the culture.
