Erasmus Experience in Amsterdam, Netherlands by Eirini

Why did you choose to go to Amsterdam, Netherlands?

The tuition fees for the Unversity of Amsterdam were cheaper in comparison to other European universities.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I didn't receive any scholarship. Non-Dutch students are mostly self-funded.

What is the student lifestyle like in Amsterdam?

Let's face it: Amterdam is well-known for weed and the Red Lights District. And beer. Lots of beer.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Amsterdam to other students?

I wouldn't recommend my study program to anyone, but I can't have an opinion about the other programs of the University.

What is the food like?

Disgusting and unhealthy in general, unless you enjoy eating bread with soup. I would only recommend kibbeling and lekkerbek.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Amsterdam?

Yes. Finding accommodation in Amsterdam is very difficult. The UvA offered me an accommodation for the first year and I paid some fee for this service.

How much does it cost to live in Amsterdam?

It is very expensive. I needed 600-650 euros just for the rent and the bills. The supermarkets are quite pricey, too, especially Albert Heijn, which is the only one that sells everything.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

I didn't learn Dutch. I couldn't find a language course that fit my schedule.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Amsterdam?

It depends on what you're looking for. There are many options.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Amsterdam?

There are some good Italian and Argentinian restaurants in Leidseplein.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

There are many museums for all sorts of people.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Amsterdam in the future?

Be prepared. Amsterdam can be a fun holiday destination, but living there permanently is not very nice, especially if you don't speak Dutch.
